@nicksteel,

Version 7.1 FREE AVG anti-virus will cost for updates after January 15, 2007.
An updated version 7.5 AVG anti-virus (available now), will continue to be FREE.

I really don't know av products well enough but I can't imagine anything better (for free!) than avast!.
This baby only has a bad GUI because other than that it is fast and low on cpu/mem and it is very rich in features such as outlook integration, p2p integration, nntp (news!), msn/icq/aim/ect integration, you name it.
Signatures come always on a daily basis and engine upgrades don't come up so often what may lead me to think that it is well designed.
I don't know but this sounds very difficult to beat...
Cheer
