Encoding OTA HDTV capture of 24. Encoded with TMPGenc and HCenc. Resulting m2v sizes completely different. TMPGenc.m2v = 912,361, HCenc.m2v = 380,820. Where have I screwed up this time?

LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\DGDecode.dll")

Mpeg2Source("E:\24\test.d2v",idct=7)

selecteven()
Telecide(order=1, guide=1, gthresh=10, post=2, vthresh=50, dthresh=7, blend=false, show=false)
Decimate(cycle=5, mode=0, threshold=0, threshold2=3, quality=2, show=false)

LanczosResize(656,448,0,0,1280,720)

RemoveGrain(mode=1).TemporalSoften(2,3,3,8,2)
AddBorders(24,16,24,16)

#ConverttoRGB24()

We don't see the settings used for HCenc (in advanced tab of the GUI) :
Quant value ?
P-factor and B-factor for Quant ?

Actually the HC.ini would be enought.

(note: and the CQ value used in tmpgenc also, please).

CQ=90 is near to the max quality for TMPGenc, while Q=5 is close to the worse acceptable quality (for my eyes) with HC.

It's depending on the source but let say that :
CQ = 90 <=> Q = 2
or Q = 5 <=> CQ = 65

P-factor and B-factor for Quant ?
Should I change these? Trying for max quality, size not important. Would Q = 1 be even better for HCenc?

For max quality, p and B factor must not be changed, and Q = 1.

Note: per mistake I encoded once with Q=0 that is theorically an erroneous value, but it works ! My m2v was 2GB insteed of 500 MB .

Thanks. Phil. Am now trying encode at Q=1 and Q=2 to see. I really like HCenc, in fact, just made a PayPal donation to the cause. I enjoy working with software being actively developed, especially now that you're working with size predictions for series recording!
