Hi guys,

I've been playing around with two of my dvd's:
The hunt for red october - retail DVD
The hunt for red october - retail HDDVD

The backup I made from the HDDVD material, is FAR better than the original retail DVD. It's simply amazing how much detail from the HDDVD is preserved in the downscaled DVD backup, and how much more detail is has when comparing it to the original DVD

Script used is a lanczosresize to PAL DVD, and a limitedsharpen/removegrain combo.

I didn't expect to see much difference, because of the downsizing in pixels and thus in detail, sharpness and "crispness".

Anybody else who has the same, or different experiences with this?

Do the same test without LS, you will probably be closer to the DVD retail. But anyway HD master always give better results because more informations are present to work with. The same way when you scan a picture at 2400 dpi then downsize it to 300 dpi the image is sharper than directly scanning at 300 dpi.

Yes, that's right.

However, I expected that a retail DVD also had a very good source for the transfer to DVD, never knew the difference is that big!
