This is something that has been bugging me for a while. A couple of years ago, my wife bought the DVD set of "Toy Story". A couple of months ago, she gave me the set to make a back up copy. I was surprised when I tried to rip the second DVD ( Toy Story II ), because it wouldn't read on my PC. So I took it to my standalone player, and "Disk Error" or something displayed. I took a look at the DVD, and it looks like the surface is blurred. Obviously, a media defect. So we lost that movie, as no DVD reader can read it. Not even part of it. On the other hand, she has a collection of VHS movies that are about 15 years old, and all of them still play fine! Some have a lot of "Drop-outs", and some are very good. All are watcheable. My question is this: 10 or 15 years from now, will our DVDs and VCDs created today still play Because the way I see it, if a VHS tape breaks or something, it's just a matter of opening the case and splicing together the tape, and that's it . If a DVD or VCD scratches or the surface becomes damaged, you loose the complete video
Think about all of this for a moment. I think DVDs VCD and KVCDs bring us high quality, but what about durability Maybe we should back up to KVCD and ALSO to VHS or consider the new D-VHS media
What do you think

i ever think about this!
i worked repairing videok7,tvs,dvds,cds and other "sss".
when toshiba put the cds on Brasil,i was work there and the
vice-president from Japan(toshiba) came and i was the "boss" here
in my city and he say:
cd is more durable, more stable and tons of "more"
and he say that learn portuguese in two weeks too!
how was the strong lie?

have some vhs tapes too and try to convert to kvcd but capture isn't good
with my all in wonder!
but works(more or less).

what i do:
convert to svcd or kvcd and "save" a copy in a box for backup.
if the first broke,i get the backup and copy!

and i have tons of musics cds too:nobody can touch it!
afraid if scratch.

editing:

better is not play football with vhs and cds....get "extended time".
take it easy.

I think the answer is yes and no, depending on the value of the video you want to backup. For hollywood movies i think the original dvd plus a kvcd backup is good enough. For personal videos (wedding, kid's, etc..) the original vhs+ kvcd backup+ dvd backup (if you have a burner) is great.
What is the new d-vhs media?? I haven't heard about that.

I have some old VHS movies where the iron oxide has crumbled and play-
the tapes ruined them, since it rubs on the VCR heads. Those that look-
ed good were no match with DVD video and audio available today.
I bought DVD's discs I discovered to be scuffed. Some had no problems
playing on a stand-alone-player, but could not be read by my PC's DVD
drive. Only a few DVD's had problems with both. It's possible to ruin VHS
tapes,e.g. they are sensitive to magnetic objects, just a CD's. Even
S-VHS is far from the quality of DVD. I expect the future resolutions for
DVD to improve beyond 720X480 with HDTV. I'm sticking with DVD
backup's.
