I don't i know if this was already posted but i feel like sharing it:

As many others i have a standalone player that does play mpeg2/kvcd at any resolution but not mpeg1 kvcd

here is a way to let the standalone think that is playing a mpeg2 file while actually it is playing an mpeg1

step1: encode in mpeg1 just as usual

step2: open tmpgenc's mpeg tools -> simple multiplex

step3: browse and select your mpeg1 file

step4: set the type to MPEG2 SUPERVCD

step5: click RUN and wait about 5 min

step6: burn as SVCD with VCDeasy

DONE

enjoy

Thanks borrini,

Yes indeed, that's the way it's described in "The KVCD from scratch" guide
It does work fine, but only for players that support SVCD playback. If the player only supports VCD playback, then it must be muxed as non-standard VCD.
But if the player does support SVCD, then your method is the most compatible

I assume you could do the same thing in BBMPEG by setting the 'Program Stream Type' to 'SVCD' and then muxing. Then burn in Nero as SVCD, non-compliant.

I'll have to try this as my player doesn't like anything other than 352x240 for MPEG-1.

This method doesn't work in my player. MPEG2 muxed as SVCD is OK, MPEG2 muxed as VCD is OK, but MPEG1 is only OK if 352x240, or if it's 29.97fps. Then it works both muxed as VCD or SVCD (I like to mux as SVCD because I can put subs and dual audio). If it's at a resolution bigger than 352x240, and it's not 29.97fps, the only way it works is MPEG2. With Mpeg1 the video is smooth but the audio cuts in and out.

I've also tried applying "pulldown" to a MPEG1 stream and muxing as SVCD, and the audio is then OK, but the video is no longer smooth

@GFR: That sounds similair to my player. I have a Philips 724. Only the first three movies on the compatibility disc (all 352x240) play without problems. Both 352x480 output choppy audio and video. The 528x480 isn't even viewable.

352x480 will play only if it's at 29.97, and I haven't figured out a fool-proof method to converting native 23.976 to 29.97 without any headaches.

Also, and I haven't tried this yet, I've read that changing 528x480 to 544x480 will improve compatibility, so that's something to consider as well.

Pulldown will work on mpeg-1. Just make sure to select 2:3 (not 3:2) pulldown under Program Stream Settings when muxing as SVCD with bbMpeg
