which ac3 codec is everyone using? I think I have AC3Filter v0.68b but I find whenever I watch a movie on my computer with an ac3 audio track, the audio is extremely quiet and I have to ramp my speakers up. Same thing if I convert the ac3 to mp2 without normalizing, my kvcds are very quiet on my dvd player. Is this normal?

I would be inclined to say yes as I have the same result, even with dvd playback the audio is quiet. I dont have soround sound, I just use the tv and this may be the reason.

Hmm...

now that I hear about it maybe its a common problem. I too, hear
low audible sounds, using my powered sub and 2 stereo speakers.

Could it be due to the low bitrate ?? I don't think so. Cause, even DVD
movies are low in sound. So, it MUST be because there is not true suround
sound speaker setup, and the two stereo speakers just ain't enough for
the DTS or 5.1 that the DVD player is putting out.

BUT, if I play my encodes or DVD titles through PDVD, I have LOUD sound.
So, this is mysterious indeed

Oh yes you're right I forgot to mention that. Files with AC3 sound, by it divx/xvid or vob's, sound perfect in PowerDVD but when I play them in moviestacker or WMP they are quuiieeeeet. Weird!

Old thread but what the hell..

PowerDVD and WinDVD use their own AC3 decoders and that's why the sound is louder than with AC3Filter which is used by WMP for example. However, you can set the loudness level to maximum gain by selecting 'normalize' in the Main tab in AC3Filter config and setting the slider to max. The filter will then adjust the volume during playback.
