I have ripped from DVD and want to edit some of the subtitles for spelling accuracy. What is a good way to go about this?

In wich format did you ripp it ?

If it's a text based format, any text editor.
If a graphic based one, you should take a good picture editor but I guess you zon't even try

Ripped with DVDDecrypter giving me an IFO file. In Moviestacker, using Vobsub to configure the subtitles, Vobsub made two files, I'm not sure what kind of files they are, subtitle files?. In Vobsub I selected "for creating idx/sub. One of the files is a text file and the other must be a graphic file, it is much larger.

I'm wondering if there is a subtitle editing program that would open them so I could edit them?

No there is not. The "sub" file is a set of bitmaps ! They are GRAPHICS ! That means that you need to edit the *picture* if you want to change anything in it.

That is why there is no programm that can do that.

You can, with subrip, change the graphics into text file that you will edit with a text editor. But the mean to put the subtitle back into your KVCD will be different off course.

Once upon a time, long long ago, I had the same idea jshew had: open the subs and edit them to be spelling-perfect.
I did my research and found what Phil found: almost nothing.
There is the SubRip option to OCR the subs and get those to text mode, but believe me that it takes ages.
Plus, after that, you can't mux them on DVD. You are only allowed to do that on (S)KVCD & VobSub.
But remember me if you find something useful
Cheers

Okay, thanks. Now, Dialhot, you mentioned that the means to return the subs to KVCD would be different, could you give me some guidelines on how to do it?

Hi jshew,
If using SubRip to OCR the subs pictures to text you need to use VobSub's VSFilter.dll and use Textsub command in the AVISynth script to hardencode and render the subs in the movie, and that means only one sub per movie!
If using VobSub to rip the subs to get pictures you need to use VSFilter.dll and use Vobsub command in the AVISynth script to hardencode the subs in the movie, and that means only one sub per movie!
If not you can use Winsubmux to mux a set of subs into an SVCD container so your target needs to be MPEG-2 SKVCD otherwise it won't work in VCD...
For that you need to rip the subs with SubRip and render those to bitmaps and use a *.sub file to serve as a pointer to time/bitmap to mux.
The needed target sub type for the file needs to be Philips and you have 2 different kinds of possible muxing: one is CVD and the other is (SVCD? don't remember ) so you have to see which one is compliant with your DVD player.
KDVD and DVD are completely different as they use SUP files which are very much different from SUB files.
There is a SUB2SUP tool but I don't know if that works.
Problem: when using the mux-method you have to choose one of two possible mux-modes. Half of the DVD player read one of them and the other half read the other mux-mode
So maybe hardencoding is your best shot.
Cheers

Sounds like you know a lot more about this than I do. I'm trying to learn. I'm trying to make a VCD (KVCD), not DVD or KDVD. Of course the source is DVD.

So it sounds to me like there might be a way, but I don't yet follow it too well. And, what do you mean, only one sub per movie??

Hi jshew,
I don't know so much about it but I can try to assist you (and others).
The hardencoded way using VobSub/TextSub commands in your script will *print* the subs on your encoded movie.
So even if you don't have an SVCD subtitle compliant DVD player you will always see subs on your TV screen.
But then you get to have only one sub language (it is not selectable).
The muxing way allows you to have 4 selectable subtitle streams in you movie. That way you can watch the movie without subs or you can choose one (from 4 possible) of the selectable.
Post any doubts about it and I'll do my best to help.
C ya

PS-If you have many doubts you can download Teamspeak 2 client (see the anything not related to video - forum) on your PC and we can talk on the internet about it.
You will need a microphone and speakers for that

Okay, hardencode will be the way to try then. Sounds like I'll need a program, TextSub, in addition to VobSub?

Hardencode is good enough for me too
No you won't need anything else if you already have VobSub installed
TextSub() and VobSub() are VSFilter.dll command for AVISynth scripts.
The same when you use GripFit.dll by the great all mighty SansGrip.
It has 3 internal AVISynth commands: GripCrop, GripSize and GripBorders.
Code:
Example:
LoadPlugin("C:\video\MovieStacker\Filters\MPEG2Dec3dg.dll")
LoadPlugin("C:\video\MovieStacker\Filters\GripFit_YV12.dll")
LoadPlugin("C:\video\MovieStacker\Filters\VSFilter.dll")

Mpeg2Source("c:\my_movie\movie.d2v")
GripCrop(544, 576, overscan=2)
GripSize(resizer="BilinearResize")
GripBorders()
TextSub("c:\video\subtitle.srt")
But you need to download SubRip to read your DVD's IFO file in order to create a text based subtitle file.
And that way you can edit the text SRT file using notepad.
If you dont like notepad just try freeware Subtitle WorkShop
Easy, ain't it
Give it a try and if it doesn't work post your problem with the given example.
Cheers

You mean on a (K)SVCD ?

There is a very good software called winsubmux for that.

Yeah, like Phil said (and also myself a few posts above) you can use winsubmux.
Now notice that there will always be compatibility problems when using the mux-way.
You can only choose between CVD or SVCD type of subtitle formats.
Some standalones read CVD, some read SVCD, and only a minority read both CVD and SVCD subs.
You have to burn two clips of video: one with CVD format and the other with SVCD format and check which one your player can read.
This way you can end up with a movie that you can read with subs at home. But if you take it to your friend's place to have dinner and watch a good movie on his/her standalone you might find out that it can't read the same format your's can...
The hardencoded way works flawlessly everytime. Problem: you get to have only one language on screen...
The world is not a perfect place
Anyway, the mux-way.
Get SubRip tool. Find it maybe at Divx Digest...
Procedure:
-Choose "File">"Open VOB"
<New window appears>
-click on "open IFO" and browse until you find and select to open your movie's IFO file
-use the language stream combo box to choose the language you want to rip off
-click on "Save Subpictures as BMP"
-click on the blue icon that is used to choose "output format"
<New window appears>
-scroll down and open the "graphical formats"
-choose Philips SVCD designer graphical format
-click on "convert to this format" button.
<Back to the old window>
-click on "start" button
<output path and filename window appears>
-choose where and with what name SubRip will save the subs
-a subtitle will show on screen along with a new window where you can change some settings (better leave it as it is by default).
-click on the "OK" button
-wait a couple of minutes while it reads all the subs and save them to BMP files.
-when it finishes (get's to 100% ) you can try to close subrip and it will ask if you want to leave without saving the text.
-answer NO.
<a new subtitle window appears>
-go to the new window File menu and select "Save As"
-choose a filename and save it to the same folde you chose for the BMP files.
-close SubRip
-open the *.sub file you created as text file with notepad
-erase the lines until you see something like:
ss00001.bmp 00:00:47:20 00:00:51:02 496 066 112 452
ss00002.bmp 00:00:51:08 00:00:53:21 472 050 124 441
ss00003.bmp 00:00:54:09 00:00:56:16 328 066 196 452
...
-save the file and exit notepad.
-download winsubmux
-open it
It is pretty straight forward
-load your encoded KSVCD mpeg file
-choose a name for the output KSVCD after muxing it the subs
-click on the stream #0 check-box and open the *.sub text file created with SubRip
-click on the "Load All" button and wait for it to load all the BMP files
-under "Multiplex" choose CVD or SVCD format for stream #0
-click "Multiplex" button and wait while it muxes all the BMPs to your new KSVCD file.
-burn the muxed KSVCD file with VCDEasy or NERO on a CDRW
-play it on your standalone
-can you see the subs? No?
-do the Winsubmux again by choosing SVCD under "Multiplex" and burn it again
-can you see the subs? Most probably you do. No? Then your player can't read selectable subs
Cheers

A best idea is to test the standalone capabilities before to start.

Oh, I'm not an FC Porto fan but being it a Portuguese soccer team and since I'm Portuguese, yes, it made feel very much proud
It's been 17 years since we had a Portuguese champions League winner and it was also FC Porto by then.
I didn't watch the game 'cause I was working but "they" told me it was a great match: any team could have won.
Hope you're not a Monaco supporter yourself or you are right now very disapointed.
Anyway this is a good thing to happen to us right before the final stage for Euro2004
Are you visiting us to watch some games, Phil?
Cheers
