DVD/KDVD switchable subtitles
Hi there,
This is only for those of you that are doing DVD or KDVD. This is not for VCD/SVCD/KVCD/KSVCD. Ever wondered how to insert subtitles in a DVD/KDVD when it doesn't come with subs in the 1st place? Or maybe you want to edit the subs that came with it? Ever shot your own movie with a camera to convert to DVD/KDVD and you want to add subs on it but you don't know how? Well, DVD/KDVD switchable subs have their own format and that's SUP format. It's not text based, it's picture based. There's no way you can achieve this with winsubmux. You'll have to use other tools. There is already a great guide by VMesquita on authoring KDVDs with selectable subs, but you need to have those subs in the SUP format already. So here is a good guide and some tools to generate SUP subs when you don't have them yet, or how to edit them when you need. Here's the link http://dvd.box.sk/index.php?pid=dvdr...&rid=30&krok=0. Hello,
Sorry but I forgot to mention that my earlier post was regarding switchable DVD subtitles for Authoring with IfoEdit. That is indeed the only way I know to make the subs work with IfoEdit. There are alternatives to IfoEdit with switchable subs, of course. For instance, DVDAuthor/DVDAuthorGUI or Mediachance's DVDLab (only Pro) can handle text SRT subs that will be rendered to Subpictures during the muxing stage of Video/Audio/Subtitles. But watch out with DVDLab Pro. It is still in Beta stage and it seems not to be 100% accurate at the moment being. With these two you can build your text subtitles with Subtitle Workshop, for instance, and feed them to the authoring tool later. I will try to search for more authoring tools capable of switchable subs, and post the findings here, as well as the needed procedures. Cheers |
I use srt2sup since 4 months and I just want to add 2 things :
- char renderer is unfortunally not very good (the author tell it himself in the doc) and the drawing of the letters is a little "square" and not very "rounded". - there is a companion to that tool called SupRemap (same author) that allows you to change the color map of authored subtitles (in the IFO) because this part is also a pain in the ass. Ifoedit generates subtitles with all colors set to GREEN ! |
Thanks for the info rds. :)

Indeed the results are far from better when using srt2sup. Nevertheless seems to be the only subs tool rendering pictures from text that I can find. BTW you wouldn't know any other tool, would you? Quote:
Thus the creation of supremap tool. From the tests I did so far, and since DVDlab Pro seems to have some serious muxing problems reported by enterprise DVD verifier tools, DVDAuthorGUI seems to be the best all in one package. Because the muxing engine seems to be very good and because it does accept text based subs that are internally rendered to switchable picture subs. The only but is that if you already have a VOB file, you need to demux it first to get an m2v and an mp2. But I guess I can live with that :D BTW TMPGEnc DVD Author does not support switchable subs...:( Cheers |

(note: I didn't try if it can import menu done by DVD Menu Author that is the best menu designer I know). |
