Subtitles: Is there a way to make hard subs more visible?

I have a Divx movie with hardsubs on it. Most of the time they are readable, but the subs are pure white with no shadow, so when something white is on the screen the subs become unreadable. Is there a way to edit the video to manually add shadows to the subtitles, or something along those lines to make the subs more readable?

In is not possible to change something that is INTO the picture.

try changing the contrast and gamma of your video
if then you are able to see the subtitles in the white backgrounds
then you still have a chance but you will lose a bit of quality in the process
(is it more important the subs or the quality?, you be the judge, its your movie)

if you ARE able to ssee them get some utility to "READ" (ocr scan)
the subtitles from your movie, using the font color and subtitle area as a basis (dont know the name or how to use that utility, i just saw it was possible to OCR the subs back to text file)
then use an antialiased font with outline and put the subs back with same font size, then you reencode with your new subs.

an easier way would be to get the exact same subtitles that where used in that movie and reencode with them, dont forget the outline in fonts.
