How to adjust subtitles because of missing minutes in film
 

I have a scratched or defective DVD that has about a minute or so near the middle of the film that cannot be ripped (nor viewed). I can put the vobs, including the partial one, all together in DVD2AVI and I prepare the script in Moviestacker, including the subtitles.

But it appears that the subtitles get out of sync beginnning after the spot where the minute or so is missing.

Anyone have ideas about how to adjust this?

In which format are the subtitles that you are including ? I guess idx/sub files ?

Yes. Idx/sub (ifo). That's the option I chose in the Moviestacker (VobSub) configure subtitles.

I don't know any tool that handle idx :-(
But you can edit it with a text editor and adjust the times there.

Could I maybe rip the subtitles using a different program (besides DVDDecrypter) to get a different format or something?

You can convert them in textfile (format srt) with subrip via OCR method. Tehn use tools like timeadjuster or subtitle worshop to adjusts the times, and use the srt in you script with a "textsub" command insteed of "vobsub".

I think I stumbled on a relatively easy way to solve my problem. I noticed that the subs were about 40 seconds late after the missing piece. Opening the srt file (I think that's what it is) that VobSub made when I configured the subs in Moviestacker, I read at the top of the of the file, above the timestamp information, that you can resync subs by inserting a gap. I did so, a minus 40 second one, and it seemed to do it. I viewed the result in TMPGEnc in the Source range viewer of Settings. Seems to be insync now. :D

You can specify that you want to have this gap starting from a precise poitn in the movie ? Or do you mean that you have a 2 sub files : one for the first part and one for the second part ?
Because if you have 2 files, you should have mentioned that in the first place ! :-(

Yes, I double clicked on the smaller of the two sub files resulting from the indexing process in Moviestacker (VobSub) and there was some readme type information at the top that told how to insert a delay to adjust synchonization. And I was able to insert it in the middle. Now there were two sub files, one being very small in size and the other very large (over 2MB), but I don't think that's what you mean by two files? The smaller one had all the timestamp info for each sub from the whole film. I'm not sure about the larger file, what it does, but I seemed to have success putting the delay only in the smaller file.

I meant 4 files if you want. 2 idx and 2 sub. I thought that because I didn't know that you can put the delay in the middle of an idx.

The idx are the time index as you saw but didn't you notice that there arent any subtitles there ? Guess where they are really ? In the other file ;-)

That's what I was thinking (about the larger file).
