Hi all,
First post. Joined here via a tip from LordSmurf when I sent him a question.
SO…..I have several old (from mid 80’s) VHS Home movies which I want to digitize and put on DVD. I’ve done this before in the past, but wasn’t really concerned about the quality of the capture back then. Just wanted to get the tape transferred to DVD for the “convenience” .
Now I want to do it all over again, but this time want to do it “right”, at least as far as “right” allows my budget to go. As a side note, I build/repair PC’s on the side (EE for Lucent Technologies by day), so I would consider myself above average technically speaking. I am here to hopefully get advice from experts/avid enthusiasts who do this considerably more than myself.
The deck which I will be using as the source is a Panasonic S-VHS, model PV-S7670. (the tapes are just plain VHS, just FYI). I was looking at the AVerMedia MTVHDDVRR :

as my capture device. Is this a good product for my needs? Do I need something else, or is there a better product within this price range or less that does as good or better?
The tapes I will be capturing all seem to be reasonably good, they just have an ever so soft look to them. They look like they need to have the saturation punched up a bit (they look slightly muted/washed out) and the contrast turned down a bit. Also, I noticed that in scenes where the date is displayed, the digits leave a blackish streak to their right side. Not real noticeable in certain scenes, but still there. Is this just an artifact of age, due to the camera at the time, or possibly some sort of thing that would require TBC? As I stated earlier, the videos on the whole look remarkably good considering their age. The video is very stable. No tracking issues at all.
Thanks in advance for any input/advice,
Rob
