DVDR04/HD04 Firmware Downloads

These recorders have been out of production for a few years now. Most newer LiteOn recorders, firmware versions past 098 for the 500X recorders and firmware versions past 197 for the 5045 recorders will not successfully hack. The Smart Firmware Hacker will find the code for MV and change it but the recorder will not allow protected content recording. The hack will still enable 3-hour mode on recorders that do not have it and set the recorder to region free (or -1 from original region). ILO HD04 and R04 still have no problems with the hacked firmware and all latest versions available hack properly.

Quick links to posts in this thread:
Attached to this post:
  • ILO / LiteOn SMART Firmware Hacker (Program hacks iLo and LiteOn firmware to enable 3-Hour mode, disable Macrovision, make region-free.)
  • iLo images for recorders, iLo logo

Hopefully this thread will prevent more LiteOn related files from being lost to the black hole of the Internet.

ILO Recorder Firmware Update Instructions

Some of the main issues and questions while doing a firmware update on the ILO recorders are "the upgrade won't start" or "the display says data or file" or "do I need to apply each upgrade in order" and so on. This post is to take some of the question marks out of the process of firmware upgrading.

About Firmware - Firmware is software that is “flashed” or “written” to an IC chip inside the recorder. The firmware is what tells the recorder what do and how to act when the user starts pressing buttons. Firmware is the “Brains” of the recorder. All firmware files are collective, meaning, a newer firmware update will have all the updates and fixes from previous versions. There are 2 devices in the recorder that get updated, the system and the DVD drive (burner). A firmware upgrade can be for either one or both. A “Drive” will be updated to allow it to recognize newer and advancing media technologies, fix bugs in the drive, allow faster and more precise recording and many other things. The “System” will be updated to fix issues in the way the recorder functions, give it new abilities, changes to the user interface and many more.

Hacked Firmware - You may see the term “Hacked Firmware”. This term refers to firmware files that have been modified from their factory state, usually to add features that the recorder normally wouldn’t have out of the box.

Firmware Files - Firmware files for the ILO/LiteOn recorders are divided into 3 categories. You will see 3 different types of file extensions on the firmware file names. These extensions determine whether the update is “System Only”, “Drive Only” or “System and Drive”.
  • System Only: This extension will have one letter, an “S” and one number. Example, WMJA1185.DS1, WMJA1193.DS3, WMEA1098.ES4
  • Drive Only: This extension will have one letter, a “D” and one number. Example, WMJA1185.DD1, WMJA1193.DD3, WMEA1098.ED4
  • System and Drive: This extension will have one letter, and two numbers. Example, WMEA1097.E20, WMJA1191.D22, WMJA1193.D21
What to Install - If you are installing a new “system and drive” update, there is nothing to worry about. You will be getting the latest update for both “parts” of the recorder. If the update is just a “system only” or “drive only” update, there is an important issue to consider. You will always want to make sure you have the latest “system and drive” update installed before doing a “system only” or “drive only” update to make sure you have the latest updates for both “parts” of the recorder.

Example: You have bought a new ILO R04 with firmware version 1095 firmware installed. You go to Guitarman’s really cool firmware site (site gone) and find there are 2 newer firmware revisions available, firmware updates 1097 (WMEA1097.E20) and 1098RevB (WMEA1098.ES5). Do you want to update to the newest 1098RevB?? NO!! You notice that 1098RevB is a “system only” update and 1097 is a “system and drive” update. If you update to 1098RevB (system only), you will be missing the latest drive updates that were available in 1097.

Making the Update CD - There are many types of CD writing programs and each one has a slightly different way and terminology of doing things. Most programs will do what you want without needing to change any settings. The two most common programs for writing CD’s are Nero Burning Rom and Roxio EZ CD Creator. You can find instructions for burning the firmware update CD with these two programs on the Firmware Download Page. I will list a couple of important things to do here.
  1. It is always best to use a new CD. The firmware file needs to be the only file on the disc. If you choose to use a previously used CD, make sure to delete any old files from the write list before burning the firmware file to the disc (the old files are not actually deleted from the disc but will be hidden from showing up once the newer session has been written to the CD).
  2. If it is selectable, use “ISO Mode 1” to burn the CD.
  3. Although not necessary, it is good practice to “close” or “finalize” the CD when writing. This will help make it more readable in the recorder.
The Update Process - This is where thing get convoluted. Half the time, the update will start, the other half, it won’t. Following these steps will help to insure the update starts and installs properly:
  1. Go to the setup screen and do a system restore/reset.
  2. R04: press “Source” button on remote to until ILO/DVD is selected. HD04: Press the “Target” button so that DVD is selected.
  3. Place the update CD in the recorder and close the tray. The update may or may not start at this point. If it does, go to #6
  4. If the update does not start, press the play button. This may start it.
  5. Leave the CD in the recorder and turn the power off. Wait a few seconds and then turn the recorder back on. At this point, the update should start. If it doesn’t, the CD or the firmware file could be corrupt. Try re-downloading the firmware file and re-burning the CD.
  6. After the update completes, be sure to wait for the CD to eject from the recorder before turning off the power.
You now should have the latest fixes installed for your recorder. If you have installed “Hacked” firmware, check the recorder for the extra functions the hacks should have added.

Good Luck!!!

ILO R04/LiteOn 5005X Crossflash Firmware - NON Hacked

ILO R04 to 5005X (WMEA1098.ES5) - Use this file to flash your ILO R04 into a LiteOn 5005X. Once flashed, the ILO will be as a 5005X. You will use factory 5005X firmware to continue to update. If the 5005X update contains a drive update, it will skip that part of the update.
  • PROS: Gain all functions of 5005X recorder. Add 3 hour LP mode by hacking stock 5005X firmware file and installing AFTER the crossflash.
  • CONS: Can not hack for Macrovision.
5005X to ILO R04 (LNFC1101.ES0) - Use this file to flash your crossflashed ILO R04 back into an ILO R04
This will return the ILO R04 to its original state. After installing this file, you will be able to flash with hacked R04 firmware for LP mode and Macrovision bypass.

  • CONS: Unknown
Firmware 1201 MV/LP Hacked | Filename: WMJA1201.DA0 | Drive & System Update
  • PROS: Added ability to copy JPG and MP3 files to the HDD. Added closed captioning to the recorder
  • CONS: Unknown
These hacks will reset the region of your recorder to REGION FREE. If you want to set the recorder to the default region for your area, use the Region Free Hack for ILO/LiteOnDVD Recorders to set your recorder to the proper region after applying these hacked firmwares

_________

DVDRHD04 Old Firmware Downloads - Older HD04 firmware superseded by the firmware found above.

1178 | Filename: wmja1178.d20 | Drive & System Update

1185 | Filename: WMJA1185.DS1 | System Update
  • PROS: Fixed audio not copying from HDD to DVD. More reliable recording. Doesn't freeze during power-on. Allows copied titles (from the DVD disc) to be merged with recorded titles (Hard Disk Drive) to create one larger recording session. Each file format (Copy and Record titles must be of the same recording mode, i.e. HQ to HQ AND must reside on the Hard Disk before the merge file process can be initiated).
  • CONS: Has short audio dropouts during long recording using HDD, usually on the :00 and :30 mark. No problem with recording copied to a DVD from the HDD FF/REW functions erratic. Some have noticed erratic behavior of the clock Occasional lockup occurs while splitting a recording causing loss of recording. Can not select "weekly" as a recording option if using VCR+ to set the timer
1191 | Filename: WMJA1191.D22 | Drive & System Update
  • PROS: Fixed HDD audio dropout issue. FF/REW at up to 16X works smoothly. Includes updated firmware for the DVD drive
  • CONS: The recorder will occasionally freeze at the HELLO prompt while turning it on, requiring the recorder to be unplugged to reset it. This happens both in timer mode and manually turning the recorder on. Will occasionally record with video/audio sync problems. Audio can be as much as 1 second behind the video.
1193 RevA | Filename: WMJA1193.D21 | Drive & System Update
  • PROS: Facilitates a “Ready” state feature that enables a Power OFF / Power ON sequence to unlock units that intermittently “freeze” up. This firmware enhancement replaces the older process of having to unplug the unit from the power source; then plug the unit back in. Provides an automatic “housekeeping” function for cleaning up the last recorded session prior to an unexpected power failure (i.e., environmental outage, plug unexpectedly pulled). Enables the merging of multiple sessions and allows user defined “chapters” to be created within the merged file. These merged sessions must be of identical recording modes (i.e., HQ to HQ). Users can also drop “chapter” marks into their separate recording sessions. Supports recording sessions to 8cm (smaller) DVD discs. Regular DVD discs are 12cm. Initiates Timer Recording sessions at one (1) minute after Midnight when the timer is set to 00:00:00. Resets the default system date and time to 1/1/2005 and 00:00:00. The correct date and time will need to be set for accurate Timer Record sessions.
  • CONS: Unable to play audio CD's
1193 RevB | Filename: WMJA1193.DS3 | System Update
  • PROS: Fixes compatibility with ARCCOS protected discs.
1194 Beta | Filename: WMJA1194.DS3 | System Update
  • NOTE: You might want to install 1193 RevA first to get the drive update in that firmware.
  • After updating to 1193 RevA, install the 1194 to get the latest 'system only' fixes.
  • PROS: Fixed green tint issue. Fixes CD audio playback issue
  • CONS: ILO has claimed this to be a beta version. The update does work and fix the above issues but will be replaced by the official release when available
1195 | Filename: WMJA1195.D22 | Drive & System Update

ILO / LiteOn SMART Firmware Hacker! ~ written by Mr. Wizard!

This program Removes Macrovision, Set's Region Free, and Enables LP Record Mode if the firmware does not have it. This will work for future firmware releases (and already has, without having to be updated!) This is because the program searches for the correct area of the firmware to hack, and then hacks it for you! Works for *ALL LiteOn LVW-XXXX and ILO Firmwares (except LiteOn model LVW-5101). Should also work for Daytek and Gateway and Philips Clones. ILO is a rebranded LiteOn.

Instructions:

DO NOT USE THIS PROGRAM ON ALREADY HACKED FIRMWARE !!! This program should be ran on a SYSTEM firmware update only; Some firmware updates only contain a DRIVE update, And do NOT contain a SYSTEM update. It is not necessary, to run this program on a DRIVE firmware update.
  1. Download the newest SYSTEM firmware update from ILO's or LiteOn's Website.
  2. Use WinZIP or WinRAR to decompress the firmware file. (If it is compressed)
  3. Download and UnZip this program on this website.
  4. Double Click ILOHack.exe to run the program.
  5. Press the "Select Firmware File" button, then select the firmware you downloaded.
  6. The Program will display the success results in the Status window.

  8. In the Setup menu of the unit, look for "Restore" and select it. (unit will do a system restore)
  9. Burn the hacked firmware file to CD-R as a DATA CD & Finalize it.
  10. Place CD-R in your DVD Recorder, an upgrade message will appear, select OK.

Note from MrWizard, regard the DVDRHD04 to LVW-5045 Conversion Project: "It has been completed, unfortunately there is no easy way of converting the units. The goal was for a simple firmware crossover upgrade, but as it turned out the units needed disassembled, and manual access of the flash was needed. I will post details as soon as I can, but since the units are both now superseded by other models, it may just be outdated information for many."

DVDInfo Version 2.64 Free - Freeware utility to display information about DVD drives and DVD media such as the manufacturer ID of DVD±R/RW media. DVDInfo also works with external drives and does not require ASPI to be installed. Dialog, display, and skins can be customized by the user.

This tool was on the original iLo hack site, so I figured that I might as well just add it here, too.

Sorry, I know these are old posts but I just joined today. (10/18). I've been trying to find out what version of firmware I have on my Liteon 5045. At one time I had installed the 197 hack but sent it away to get a new dvd player and other work so I don't know if it is still there. I can't copy a movie for a backup so macrovision protection seems to still be there.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hey. It's 2022. This site has been extremely helpful. I downloaded a hack for the 5005. It was labeled something like 5005 r1 lp + nomv. My player had stopped playing cds, however I burnt it as a dvd iso through Nero iso burner. That was the only way of burning to work for me. And it worked great. I was on 0098-b. Worked like a charm. Never could find the mr.wizzard smart hack. That would be nice for other people getting into this in the later years as his site isn't around??? Anyways no Macrovision was nice. Worked instantly. From the future, thanks everyone who archived everything. Commercial vhs to dvd copying worked great! Thanks
