new to this endeavor, my sole interest here is restoring my many old vhs jazz videos into dvd (source material is xth generation vhs copies--very degraded images, including many offspring of flaky pal-->ntsc dubs). my initial attempt was via: jvc xvs44u(svhs out)-->canopus advc3000-->mac imovie-->idvd, using canopus settings to sharpen images and also remove all chroma (cleaner and nice retro b&w look) before capturing on the mac. questions: (1) should i replace the jvc with better one (if so, which?), and/or add tbc unit (if so, which?); (2) is canopus advc3000 box adequate for this application (if not, what?); (3) for initial try i used a friend's powermac g4 dual processor, now have to get my own mac, and don't know if i need to get one of those, or if the new g5 imac has sufficient (and efficient) processing power for my purposes;(4) what fcp filters, proc amps, detailers, etc. should i use? (5) what other elements to enhance the images? i know perfection is not possible, but these images deserve some respectful restoration, and, even though an absolute beginner in this realm, i would like to (within reason) get fairly optimal results within the limitations of my source material. thanks in advance for any suggestions.
