Dual Core CPU: Does it speed up video encoding ?
 

is there anyone here that has a Dual core CPU (AMD Or Intel?)

if you do, and you do video encoding, has it helped speed up the process?

I know they are supposed to be good for multi-tasking.

i went from a amd 1.8 GHz Athlon to a intel 1.8 GHz core 2 duo.

generally things have speeded up.
but i would not say dramatically.

say around a 5% increase.

but i also went from a ide harddrive to a raid 0 sata 1.

personally i think the ram & the harddrive is what is slowing you down.
and unless you beef up ram to be the ddr 2 type and sata 2 type harddrive, then its not worth getting a dual (or more) core.

the other benefit is that you can multitask much better, as 2 cores allow more responsiveness in XP.

bottom line, yes you will find an improvement.
but whether it justifies your expenditure... well that is for you to decide.

I agree with Manthing. I installed a new mother board and a Duo core CPU. It is about 5 percent faster. It stays way cooler now because the Pentium 4 runs super hot.

I have an Intel Dual-Core 1.66 CPU in my laptop. My desktop is a Northwood Intel P4 2.8Ghz 400FSB. The encoding speed on the laptop is about twice as fast, but it still takes hours and hours to encode, where I still have to do it overnight. Audio restoration speeds remained largely unchanged. The only thing that is much faster is transcoding (DVD Shrink), where the laptop can do a disc in 15 minutes that takes the desktop an hour or two.
