Quality loss in moving AVI files
 

Hello Mr. K,
I make workgroup folders of video,shot on my camcorder
Sometimes I need to move or transfer the folder.
Example, Move a folder to a new PC. It seems the photos,title clips
and audio files allways make it ok. I am never sure of the video.
Sometimes it looks ok, sometimes I think I can notice a differance.
I realize recapturing would be best, but the video is scattered over
the whole tape,most of the time, making a lot of work.
Question---When you transfer a video file do you have to recapture?

I transfer a lot between computers across the LAN, yes.
But I never have to re-capture it, no.

The files should be identical, it's digital date. It really cannot change in terms of audio-visual quality. At worst, the files could just be corrupted from a copy, but not visually degraded. A corrupt file would either not play, player with problems (stop and go stuttering), or have lots of green blocks and audio pops.

I'll assume you're using Windows to copy, not some program that might be transcoding your data.

Another good way is to take a large external hard drive, and move it from system to system, don't ever have to bother with copying the file, just move the drive. I do this with USB2 hard drives in the 500GB to 1TB range.
