Which is the safest way to have an external hard drive on a desk? in a vertical or horizontal position?

I have put together my own external hard drives, can anybody recommend the best external enclosures? with USB & firewrie under $70.00? is a metal case better than a plastic one?

I also prefer ones with a switch that I can turn on & off.

It really doesn't matter -- just don't bump it while it's working.
Aluminum is better than anything else.

Will find some suggestions and post back soon.
