Cloning Hard Drives: Will the drive letter copy, too?
 

I bought a copy of Acronis PC Backup & Recovery per the recommendation here, I just bought a WD Caviar "Black" 1 TB drive, my existing "C" drive is a Seagate green 750 gig and I have it pretty full and lots of stuff I don't want to be with out so I want to clone the Seagate and start using the WD Black as my "C" drive. When I go to allocate the WD, windows wants to allocate it as "D"...is this ok? Will it become the "C" after the clone and I switch the drives? Any other suggestions to do this correctly?

Windows cannot have two C drives, so the second drive will be seen as D.
When your clone is finished, and you remove the old C, the temporary D drive will become the new C.

The cloned drive would not function as D anyway, because all the software on it (as it's a clone) is pathed to C: locations. There are ways to force the new D to stay as D, but that takes extra effort. It doesn't happen by default. And in order for it to function, Windows would have to be installed fresh as D: instead of C:
