Auto double-clicking Mouse Problem
 

I've had my mouse for quite a while and it's worked just fine. Lately, when I right click the mouse, it will automatically double-click. I know I only clicked it once, so I don't know why it's doing that. It's really annoying when a file opens when all I wanted to do was select it and when menus open then close automatically. It doesn't happen all the time. It only happens about half the time I use it. Does anyone know how to fix this or do I have to get a new mouse? I'm using a Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical.

Are your settings in the Windows control panel correctly set to your speed preference?

I never messed with the settings, so I don't know why that would affect it. I changed the speed setting, so I will see if that helps.

Update:
I changed it to the fastest speed setting and I still have this problem.

Is there another mouse you can borrow from somewhere?
Then you could either eliminate or confirm that the mouse hardware is the issue.

I don't have another mouse I can use on this computer. I have an old PS/2 mouse but I don't have a PS/2 connection for a mouse on my current computer.

Also consider taking it apart. All you need are some tweakers, and possibly a paper towel with rubbing alcohol.
Be very careful opening it up, and pay attention to the positioning of any springs or removable parts.

I dismantled one of my mice this summer, and clean up some grease and other debris.

After I was done, it was like having a new mouse. :)

I had a usb mouse that would double click with one click.
There is a website somewhere that shows how to "bend" the little flat copper piece that has to do with the clicking.
That fixed my mouse but I decided a little later to replace it.....it is one of the older ones that the usb adapter sticks way out so I replaced it (using on laptop).

Reminds me of the fix for older style toilets. :p

I vaguely remember this being part of a sketch on Home Improvement.
I remember hearing Tim say "you just bend the rod" ... and then I just cannot remember what happened next.

Haha, seriously it did fix the mouse but yes...probably better to buy a new at that point.
Anyway I did find the article, I think the one shown is older but it worked on mine which is a couple of year old.

Money is tight so buying a new mouse at this point isn't an option. I'm going to try the fix when I have time.

If I remember correctly, I used an exacto knife and carefully did the "bend" on the plate while it was laying in its place.
Of course there is no guarantee, do at your own risk, as the article implies.

Might be wise to archive this repair if for nothing else a curiosity for the future...

Almost every non-OEM (came-with-computer) mouse I own was bought from eBay, or at Microcenter, for about $6 total.
So it doesn't have to be a high-cost replacement.
