I have several gigabytes of .wav audio files (Masters) of my band, converted from cassette to .wav, all sound real good, I recently had a friend request them in mp3 format...is there any difference in conversion quality between various audio file conversion software/freeware? Is mp4 the latest way to go,or is mp3 good enough? Any recommended? Also any Recommended Audio forum sites I should be asking this question?

Audio enthusaists would usually say mp4/aac has better quality than mp3. There are lossless or near-lossless higher qualty compressors like FLAC or AIFF, but playback options are limited. http://www.winxdvd.com/resource/aac-vs-mp3.htm

There are lots of encoders around for mp3/mp4, but all freebies give pretty much the same results. Some suggestions, with user ratings: http://www.videohelp.com/software/se...audio-encoders. Among paid software that doesn't cost very much is the popular Sound Forge from SONY, who co-founded AAC audio.
