Help! This came in my new Dell Dimension, but I can't get it to work with nero, or dvd shrink.

Try this new firmware:

Comes from here:

This is an OEM BenQ DW1620 drive, the guts inside under the pretty "Philips" and "Dell" logos.

More info on these drives here:

This looks interesting:

It seems you can make the OEM drive into the full RETAIL drive. I did this on a Compaq (Pioneer) 103 years ago, and the Pioneer true firmware made the dirve work better than the Compaq version. OEMs have a way of poorly supporting firmwares.

Just post more questions as you think of them, and I'll see them later.

Man, Dell's tech support is about as useful as tit's on a boarhog. I have spent the last 3 hours on the phone with their "gold tech support" listening to one person after another tell me that the issue isn't with the burner, but it's with the software. They expect me to contact nero and ask them to add my POS dvd burner to the nero software. Well, I guess I'll give it a try. Believe me though, if I don't get a response from them, this whole computer is going right back! Let this be a lesson folks. Don't by a dell for home use, they suck. Stick to a business class machine!

If anyone else has any other suggestions as to what I can try, please let me know.

The drive DELL is using is subpar, according to a lot of reports I've read tonight. And rather than admit to this, they are blaming anybody else on the radar: software, users, etc. It's the drive, plain and simple.

Pioneer, LG and LiteOn are really the ONLY reliable burners these days (current as of Dec 2004).

Try the Nero 6 demo.

Well, I'm not sure what the hell just happened, but all of the sudden nero 6.6.0.3 demo version just recognized the drive, and successfully burned a dvd. Let's hope it continues to work.
