software can read and burn better than others?

why is it that some software can read and burn better than others?

I use CloneDVD when duplicating homemade discs, for the most part this will read and write just about anything, but every once in a while I get a DVD that this will not read there are no physical defects or smudges, most of the time when I get errors it is a VOB reading issue.

Smart Ripper, DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink may read it perfectly.
Is this due to better error correction of the software?

Just curious why some software works better on certain discs than others.

sometimes I will come across a disc that was improperly burned as a cdsf and not the proper UDF format. CDSF is for cds not dvds. Some image apps (mainly Nero) does this either by accident or something else. As their is no setting for it and its not seeing something correctly. At anyrate most rom drives trying to read a dvd burned in that format go to a crawl or stop reading altogether saying their are a zillion errors when the disc is actually fine
