IFOEdit...Is it good enough for DVD authoring?

Hello,

I have .m2v and .ac3 files that I need to author to make a DVD Folder (Video_TS) for a menu-less DVD.

Just wanted quick DVD authoring for my TV captures, so tried the IFOEdit freeware and it did the job. It produced the Video_TS folder, which when burned to DVD using ImgBurn, played fine in standalone DVD Player. All videos I want to author with IFOEdit are just simple single track audio (.ac3) and video (.m2v). No menus, no sub-titles, no angles, no multiple audio tracks.

But I read in some forums that IFOEdit may not produce 100% compliant DVDs all the time.

What's your professional opinion on that?

Do you need/want to only use freeware?
What other software might you have installed on your computer, as related to video work?

I've started to use Womble MPEG Video Wizard DVD for authoring menu-less discs. It has a very quick authoring tool, though it only accepts muxed sources. TMPGEnc Authoring Works has some bugs that I've run into, too. It was my go-to app for years and years, but I may swap to Womble MVW DVD for some of my menu-less work hereafter. Neither of those are free, however.

I was testing out authoring freeware just yesterday, but had to stop because the encodes were finishing (and client projects come before testing). If I have a few free minutes tomorrow, and an authoring system is open, I'll resume. Bombono was going to be next.

Note that most of our with-menu professional work is done with either DVD Studio Pro (OS X) or Ulead DVD Workshop 2 (Windows XP), with menu-less discs done in TDA/TAW (or maybe Womble MVW DVD moving forward). Rarely is anything else used or needed in any way. Encore and Architect are available, too, but that's mostly for the purpose of Blu-ray work, and not DVDs. DVDSP and DVDWS2 handle DVDs quite well.

Thanks. I have been using Sonic DVDIt (Very old version that I got free with new laptop), which authors 'ok', and more importantly, never tried to re-encode a compliant stream.

But for my ongoing task of capturing B&W movies (from satellite box) and converting them to DVD-Video discs (I capture one movie a day so the collection is growing), just wanted to try some quick freeware that will just take input files (through a BROWSE button) and produce output files without asking for menu settings, project settings...etc. That's when I tried IFOEdit. It is suggested in the other forum (Videohelp) but wanted to see how it is seen in this DFAQ community, especially by yourself, admin & LS.

I do not intend to buy an authoring software at least for the moment.

When you test Feeware authoring tools, please test IFOEdit (besides Bombono) as well and let us know.

Alright, well, so far I've had a few spare moments to test out two freeware authoring programs.
Here's my verdict on one of them: Looking for a simple, FREE, no-frills authoring program

Simple DVD Creator did well at quickly authoring an MPEG-2 file to a menu-less DVD, and not messing it up in any way.
