Freeware suggestions for DVD authoring in 2018?
I am aware of Simple DVD Creator 1.5a. I have been using it from the time it was suggested by LS or kpmedia in one of the forum posts. However, today I came across an error where the software doesn't create all the files required in the Video_TS folder. While I try to identify the reason why it is behaving this way, meanwhile, I wanted to know is there any other good freeware program for simple DVD Authoring (menu-less is fine, with menus is a bonus).
I am using Windows 10. Regards |
IMGburn is very popular, as is DVD Styler, both free.

I thought ImgBurn is only used for burning discs. DVDStyler seems to have trojans, difficult to uninstall. |
So sorry for missing the difference. Yes, IMGburn is burning only.

The DVDStyler exe with trojan that was warned about here on the forums earlier has been removed from the dvdstyler site. The binaries that are linked now are ones that have been checked by sourceforge.
Virustotal shows CMC detecting a trojan in the current one but that's likely a false positive. The 32-bit download is reported as clean. |
Thank you both for the replies.
I will check out DVDStyler. Meanwhile, I came across another tool "IfoEdit", and it authored my DVD successfully. I hope the DVD is compliant to the player. I would look forward to suggestions from Lordsmurf for any more suggestions. |
Ulead DVD Workshop 2 (abandonware) still works fine, at least up to Win7, with the only problem being no audio preview. If you want audio preview, just launch a VM with XP installed. This is the best DVD authoring app ever made. Perfect blend of advanced features, yet very usable interface. I use it in Win7 and WinXP.
Simple DVD Creator (freeware) is nice for menu-less discs. TMPGEnc DVD Author (payware) is still easy to use, though the menu-making left much to be desired. The Blu-ray authoring is actually not as bad. DVD Styler (freeware) is like a free version of TMPGEnc DVD Author. Maybe slight better. But still leaves much to be desired on the menu quality. |
Thank you.
LS, what is your opinion on IfoEdit for plain, menu-less DVD Authoring? It is always good to have multiple alternatives. |

Regarding Ulead DVDWS, I remember way back in the day when I used that software, there was either a glitch or it was me, but on the resultant DVD, I was unable to skip through chapters using the next/prev button the remote. When you hit the button, it'd go back to the menu. I was brand new to DVD authoring at the time, but I do remember that happening.. Could have been me.. Did you experience this?

It was probably just user error. (It happens to all of us, somewhere, on something. :wink2:) DVDWS2 chapters could be set at least 2 ways, and it was easy to make a mistake if not being tedious. I can see several ways where what you experience may happen, especially if you let the software make its own (rotten) choices automatically. Letting software "do stuff" rarely ends well. |
Yes, it probably was user error knowing me. I have DVD Architect by Sony. I need to author a DVD9 soon so I may give that one a try since it's newer. Any experience with it, like it or dislike?
I posted another question in the premium member forum too btw. |
thank you for this great information , i will get a vm installed and xp for that software :)
