Hi there

Just after options on whether i should 'upgrade' my VHS set up. I'm looking to get the best possible picture quality out of pre-recorded 'studio' tapes.

I currently have a JVC HR DVS2 but was just considering whether I'd get any picture improvements moving to something like a 9600/9800 or event D-VHS unit like HR DM10000.

I have read conflicting opinions that D-VHS fixes certain issues in some VHS tapes and offers slightly 'better' picture, while others say a high end 9600 etc will do the same and may even be better.

So there's that argument + are either of them 'better' than my DVS2? [worth the $ in upgrading?]

many thanks

D-VHS is rarely better.
That's because tracking seems to be attuned to SP VHS only, preferably from retail tapes.

Remember, all rules have exceptions. This has some. But exceptions do not overrule rules.

Thanks for coming back to me Lord Smurf.

Do you think there is any possible benefit in getting a JVC 9500/9600 [or Panny 200/1000] over my current DVS2? I know the Pannys will give me a different look to the JVCs.

Also, can i ask you what you think of the Thomson Scenium DVH-8090. What transport does it use? Is it a re-badge or do they make their own stuff? I guess parts would be/could be an issue down the line?

Oh and SP tape are 90% of my tapes, so thats fine..

Ehh.... the DVS2 can be nice, but I hate the design. It's a fragile tank, and breaks too easy. In fact, most units you'll ever see are "for parts only" for that reason. After my last experience, refurb'ing then supplying to a member here, I refuse to touch these anymore. His broke in shipping, and was fixable. But even with my instructions, and him being careful, it just broke more. That front panel is especially a huge POS, shatters like glass.

The 9500 won't be better.
The 9600 might be, it's debatable. Maybe. I don't want to say "yes", and have you spend money on it, and then ends up being disappointing. So again, maybe.

NV-FS200 will be different. Maybe better, maybe not, but different. I still want an FS200 (ie PAL AG-1980), struck out several times now trying to acquire one.

Thomson Scenium DVH-8090 looks to be JVC rebadge, 9911 era.

Define better. Are you looking for sharper? Retain grain? Vivid colors? What?

I think that's half the reason i want to 'upgrade' the DVS2 is ugly. and yes the miniDV site has crapped itself. The VHS part works well when its not asking me to 'insert cleaning tape'!

I'm really just looking for the best possible image from my VHS tape collection. I know that's subjective. Ideally sharper, but not grainy. I had an FS90 and sold it as i didn't really like the image - very grainy and not sharper than the DVS2. I'm rather partial to the JVC image.

I ask about the Thompson 8090 as its a D-VHS. It looks nice too. Just wondering if it would be reliable or a POS?

JVC DV decks were flawed engineering. Those little SOBs eat tapes more than play. VHS great, DV worthless.

Oh no ... "insert cleaning tape". I forgot all about that. There are posts here on it. Years ago. In most cases, the sensor is bad, the heads/transport is perfectly fine.

FS90 is crap.
It's similar to the AG-1970, but lower and sans TBC.

Thompson may be fine, only get if a deal. I'd personally be far more interested in the FS200. I do like JVC better, but what I see, what you're saying here, I'd go for the Panasonic instead. (My advice is tailored to situations, not generic. For you, I think FS200 would be the best move.)

Thanks for that. One other question; FS200 or HS1000? 1000 is newer right? but not much? What about a Panny 960. its a 2001+ model. Is newer better??

I do love the front flip down panel on the 1000.

Consensus on FS200 is that it's just better.
Newer is just newer, not necessarily better. In fact, often newer is bad (more plastic, cheaper made).

For VHS playback, the DVH-8090 is lousy, and utterly hopeless in SQPB mode. (I currently own two of them.)

BTW, FWIW, that Thomson is far from a straight "JVC rebadge" (that would be the Philips VR-20D). Their D-VHS recordings are, in fact, often not interchangeable: frequent glitches on playback, tapes that play flawlessly in one brand won't ever produce a stable picture on the other — sometimes no picture at all,...

Only some recordings on the highest grade D-VHS tapes interchange well. It is (was?) a known issue in PAL-land. (I seem to recall there was a similar issue on NTSC-land with Mitsubishi vs JVC decks.) Furthermore, there was a production run (of the Thomson DVH-8090) with a bad MPEG encoder that always imprinted/burned a subtle stripy pattern on the picture (vertical columns/lines). I had one of those too.

Thanks for the info on the Thompson but I've decided to go the S-VHS route now, the JVC DM10000 is just too expensive. Am now leaning toward the FS200 as recommended by Lord Smurf [or even the 1000 which i'm kind of partial to..] Any thoughts on those?

I tend to favour the FS200 (I keep one at hand) over the 1000 (sold it). I find it gives a slightly 'rawer' image (read: a 'less-processed' look). But this is nitpicking, YMMV and you can't go wrong with either IMHO.
