Assuming I read the 8mm camera thread spreadsheet properly, the Sony DCR-TRV250 should be able to play back 8mm and Hi-8 tapes, right? Yet ... mine is not. At least, not tapes recorded on a different camera.

If I record onto a Hi-8 tape with this camera, it plays back just fine.

I don't suppose I'm missing some sort of setting or one weird trick or something?

The DCR-TRV250 does not support playback of analog tapes, only digital.

Well, boogers. I wonder if I looked at an older version of the spreadsheet.

With very few exceptions the TRV-1xx and 2xx series Digital8 cams did not support V/Hi8 playback.

I suspect that it will be recording in Digital 8 format, so it would be able to play it back (the physical tape for "Video 8", "Hi 8" and "Digital 8" is the same).

My TRV-110e plays back Video 8-recorded tapes OK; the manual indicates that it will play back Hi 8-recorded tapes as well but I haven't tried that.
