Do you have a photo of what that's supposed to be?

No I don't, the local repair shop tech told me it was the link gear, he said usually when this gear goes it takes the plastic cassette gears with it but the cassette gears look ok he just has to find the link gear and re time the unit...that's what I was told, this shop comes recomended around town, but that may not mean anything.

I don't have a service manual, no. I'm not using the AG-1980 today (a rare occurrence!) so I may pull it, open it, and photo it.

I want to change its fuse anyway, I think it's causing an audible buzz, powerline noise. Last fuse popped out one day, and the buzz showed up afterwards.

I opened up my AG-1980 today, and I still have no idea what a "link gear" is. All the gears I see are resins or plastics. While there are plenty of metal parts, I don't see anything that could be (by common sense guestimations) a "link gear".

I know a good bit about VCRs -- but I'm not an broadcast engineer or electronics tech. It sounds like a made-up term to me, but I could be wrong.

I looked the term up on Google, and got almost no hits -- most of what I did see all related to Panasonic branded VCRs from yesteryear. So maybe it's a Panasonic-specific part? (And if that's the case, then it's a "made up term" from Panasonic, and I won't feel so stupid.)

Every now and then, somebody has a question that stumps me. This is one of those times. The most I can do is say "GOOD LUCK!" and wish you well on it.

You may have to buy a "for parts only" broken VCR, and then gut it for good pieces.
