Intentionally create chroma artifacts for fake VHS videos?

Hey there,

I had wrote a topic (http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/3...acts-%28VHS%29) about "chroma artifacts" that I now know are caused by 'lack of flying erase heads' (thanks to you) - my question to you; however, is how would I go about to achieve this effect? I want to make some VHS-compilations for YouTube, and, as weird as this sounds, the effect actually makes it look for vintage-y if you will - a look I am seeking.

Thanks - and look forward to hearing from you!

I see you've since bumped the post at VH, but did you ever solve this? I've always been one to remove errors on tapes, so it's amusing to be asked how to create them.

All you'd need to do is create a faint rainbow image overlay images, and then use a motion tracking in Adobe After Effects. To get the shimmering effect, you may have to use some sort of filter.

As I said, I usually remove it -- not add it!

Did you ever figure it out?

That black flicker isn't what you wanted.

Perhaps create it on a VHS tape that has white or black recorded on it, capture it, then key it in. It might not be exact, but might be close enough for folk music.

I think he is seeking a transition/effect that looks like an attempted insert with a VCR that lacks a flying erase head.
