Hi, I just got a JVC HR-S9500U for the holidays for converting my tapes (I'm using a Toshiba DR-430 DVD recorder to cap them). I have everything hooked up including the S-Video cable as well as the composite cables. I can't see my DVD recorder menu when I have the S-Video cable plugged in, but when I unplug it everything is there.
My main concern is that it's only capturing what the composite cables are putting out rather than the S-Video one. Is it, and if it is, is there any way to fix it? Sorry if I sound like a total noob, I'm newer to tape archiving.

Thanks!

There is no reason to connect the composite output and S-Video output of the VCR to the DVD recorder at the same time.

Connect the S-Video output and select the corresponding line input of the DVD recorder using its remote/menu system.

That should be a good VCR (if NTSC, not PAL), and it's a decent DVD recorder. It won't make the tapes better, but it also won't make them worse like most DVD recorder.

Don't connect both composite and s-video. That's probably all it is. And yes, use the s-video.

You may find that you need a TBC between the VCR and the DVD recorder.
