I tried a dvd in a Win 10 laptop (Ninja Scroll 4:3 version) @ 1600x1200, this was full screen on the laptop with no borders.

Ninja Scroll

I then tried a different tack. I used a VCR as input and upscaled on a DVDO VP50 Pro and downscaled its output with the CYP. It's video is closer to the top but with a wider gap at the bottom

DVDO Star Wars

I also tried the same but upscaled with a Framemeister, the result was very similar to the DVDO

Framemeister Star Wars

The output of both looks a little on the dark side (sorry couldn't resist).

There are other options I could try but I'm getting the feeling I'm flogging a dead horse here.

OP, Have you considered Dune HD Max or Duo, they both have S-Video outputs and able to play a wide variety of media files from HDD and Blu-ray discs (Max only), They are discontinued though so maybe expensive.

You can always buy it from the US and pay extra shipping, those are usually multi voltage units. But that's entirely up to you on how much you want to spend.
There is another player with S-Video out, The popcornhour 300

Hell no, shipping from USA is sometimes more expensive than the items themselves, i tried that with some vinyl singles, but lookign at shipping prices for PC hardware for example has discouraged me from ordering them...
