I would guess they use one of Analog Device's chips as many of those have the CTI feature and some include DNR and are 12-bit (manual mentions 12-bit decoder.), e.g the ADV7802. So if you're looking for that a ADV7842 EVAL board may be easier, lacks DNR but otherwise you can enable/disable things and tweak to your hearts content. Some of Ti's chips, e.g the TVP5160 mentions it as well I don't think any of them have a 12-bit ADC.

Pretty much all video decoders will have luma and chroma automatic gain control of some sort, but how well it works will vary.

I've been working with somebody to develop some hardware. Those ADV 78xx chip are both interesting and blah at the same time. It's way overrated by some folks. I'm really not too keen on AD whatsoever -- not just these chips, but as a company altogether. Some things just really rub me the wrong way, especially some of the misleading product marketing.

You've pretty much got a ready market.

Yes. Very niche, but a market. It's taking a lot of time, still in R&D and prototype stages. We're hoping to create something we all want and need, but doesn't exist. That's all I'll say for now.

The AD chips talk big, but don't fully deliver. The devil's in the details, the minutia, of how the chips work, options available, requirements, limitations. If the AD claims were transparent, there'd be many asterisks. So my advice is to not go out of your way, chasing AD's unicorn and fairy dust. You're likely to be just as disappointed as we were (though I knew to expect issues, so I wasn't really surprised).

A new designed capture card should marry the old technology of good capture chips and new technology of USB 3.0 or even USB C for fast computing. Such components did/do exist separately but just not in a single box because they existed in different eras of time.

Back in the day there were pro analog to SDI converters that were designed for a variety of analog video formats including the lousy VHS and were capable of handling high data rates (AVI 4:2:2 8/10 bit, PCM audio) over SDI when computer was too slow for such a task.

Now we have SDI to USB3 routers and fast computers. All what a new card has to do is to put both under one hood, schematics and service manuals do exist for both technologies to help with the design.

Looking forward for whatever you guys come up with.

Curious what other video decoder ICs you have looked at, TI has the TVP5160 that supposedly includes a line-TBC and I think it's still available, not sure how well they perform though. Panasonic and NEC made chips with it too (used in DVRs, TVs etc) but I don't think they're made anymore. The Datavideo and Cypress TBCs used Philips (later made by NXP) chips, not sure if those are still made, they made some more fancy ones than the one in the TBCs, but I don't think any of them had a line-TBC function built in.

Just as cake mixes require the addition of eggs to make consumers feel like they're doing something worthwhile, any new TBC should include at least one swollen cap so that the buyer can tinker with it and then report the triumph of repairing it on this forum.

Hey!
You mean I could quit refurb'ing VCRs myself, and sell misaligned decks?
I'd even make and include custom screwdrivers, to give it that authentic Ikea feel!

Yes, and a coupon for a soft-serve cone worth a buck!
