Want to buy/tips: PAL S-VHS VTR

Hi all,

Looking for PAL S-VHS VTR that is in working order. Am based in Australia and unfortunately the market is quite dry here.

If anybody can refer to reputable EU sellers that would also be much appreciated. Shipping cost is a lot to risk on a DOA unit so having a recommended seller would be ideal.

Thank you!

Hi vatn,
Try vcrshop.com(use the Netherlands site and Google Translate if necessary, it has more decks available), it's one of the 'popular' PAL sellers on digitalfaq, many of the members here have bought from the site and gotten good decks. It provides 30day warranty/returns and free international shipping, so it should work out well for you, even if you get a problem unit(some of the members here had gotten issues but the guy behind the site sent replacement parts over for free, not sure about bad ratings). Try getting their JVC HR-S7722EU or Panasonic NV-FS200 or Panasonic NV-HS1000, which are some 'recommended' units available on the site right now!

Thanks for the suggestion! VCRshop looks great and wow what a selection. Having looked them up a bit more it seems like they do have a good reputation and your mention of them sending replacement parts makes me very hopeful.

Good to hear ^_^ all the best with your purchase!

As a European, I know the VCRShop site. Without denigrating the shop, you can read mixed experiences about it here in the digital.faq forum. (But I haven't had any experience with the shop myself)

A big advantage is the free shipping worldwide.

Currently, the shipping costs from Germany for a 10 kg package to the USA would be 55 euros, Australia 63 euros, EU 23 euros and UK 35 euros. Which you definitely have to pay additionally at the German Ebay dealer.

You should also not forget the customs duties, which are added for the buyer depending on the country.

Of the 255 SVHS recorders listed at VCRShop, only 37 are refurbished.

If you want a Panasonic FS200, you should definitely buy one that has been refurbished or know someone who can refurbish the devices. Also, never buy a device without the original remote control and preferably with an instruction manual.
The devices are very popular and if the original remote control is missing, they have often passed through many hands. I have bought three FS200s in the past (not from the dealers mentioned) one was junk and the other two needed refurbishing.
Fortunately I know someone who specialises in repairing Panasonic VCRs and has enough spare parts.

I'm not a big fan of the Panasonic HS1000 either and use mine very rarely for digitising.

I hope you have read the overview of Panasonic SVHS recorders released in Germany.

Yep this is one of the suspicious points about the site. They would specifically label units as 'refurbished', and even some as 'for parts'. So it's important to check the label. Not every unit available there is equal.

^ Rather overlooked fact. I myself didn't think of this until chancing upon a post highlighting this somewhere on this forum. If a unit is claimed as 'tested', how did they manage to do it properly without the remote? :hmm:

Yeah I have mixed feelings about it too. Maybe not against it, but highly doubtful about buying one. Too many complaints about video quality issues with it on this forum to my liking. It's a well-known model here, but not sure if that's a good thing in this case lol. No where close to the NC-FS200 for sure. But seems to be much less rare. May not be for a good reason too. Hmm
PS: Just sent you a PM on the NV-FS200!

You do not need a remote control to test a video recorder.:D
Switch on the power button on the front panel.....when you see the lights .... it works.:wink2:
In the best case, the play button, fast forward/backward and the record button were tested....Everything works.:D

The Panasonic FS200 can be operated without a remote control.
But from the Panasonic HS1000 onwards, you need the remote control (for the tracking buttons).

You also need the remote control for the JVCs. Especially with the last devices, you can only switch the TBC on and off via the remote control. But you also have to make other settings on the JVCs with the remote control.

In the 90s, SVHS recorders were about twice as expensive as hi-fi VHS recorders. Anyone who bought one back then treated them like raw eggs, including the remote control and the operating manuals. These devices were also not used that often because the SVHS cassettes were often 3-4 times as expensive as the VHS cassettes. This was one of the reasons why SVHS could not establish itself on the German market. When in the early 2000s SVHS devices came on the market that could also record on VHS cassettes with almost the same picture quality:wink2:, the time of the video recorder was already near its end.

You should search this forum for "hodgeys" comments about the panasonic HS1000. There should exit different versions of it with different heads.

I stand corrected! So much good info here. Thanks :D

To add on, member 'juhok' has posted about multiple Panasonic decks on this forum too, such as NV-FS88, NV-FS100, NV-FS200, NV-HS1000. Might be useful info :wink2:

Not al refurbished recorders have the title refurbished, we are still working on optimizing the shop. When you buy one all are checked before shipping.

Also when you not see the remote in the picture, you can always ask for it. We have the remote control of most video recorders. But these were not included with the recorder as we offer it. You can always inquire and when we have it we will give it for free.

And our technician have build a own modification for the Dynamic Drum issue, so we can always repair it when it is broken.
