Pansonic DMR-ES10 for free, Needs Repair [SOLD]
 

I have a DMR-ES10 DVD recorder that no longer powers up. It's a shame, because I never even got to try it out in my workflow. I (foolishly) plugged it in to actually use it as a DVD player once, never unplugged it, and one day it just wouldn't turn on. All I can assume is a power surge (except none of my other A/V gear on the same power strip was damaged).

Anyway... it's FREE to someone who wants to repair it. Just pay for shipping. I get pretty good UPS rates because of my eBay activities, so shoot me your zip code and I can give you a quote.

I hope someone can bring this back to life and take advantage of its magical error-correcting qualities!

It's simple bad caps. About $10 worth of parts, and some soldering time is needed.

I wonder if Panasonic used their own caps in these? Knowing how cheap companies are, likely not. Do you know off hand if they are SMD/surface mount or thru hole radial caps that need to be replaced? Both can be DIYed, but thru hole is a lot easier to replace.

It DOES look like an easy fix. But I don't have time fix it... too many other little things on the side (like my weekend DJ business). Even my VHS restoration project itself has been on the back burner for almost a year now. Plus, even if it still worked, I don't think it would make it into my workflow. I have an AG-1980, an SR-V10, and some other great gear already.

Plus I found this unit on Craigslist a while back for only $50, so I'm not losing a ton of money. I'd rather just let someone else enjoy the cheap find if they have time to repair it.

I have purchased from that vendor before. Its actually a very easy job as the power board is not multilayer. I would have thought that the kit at $9.99 would have included more than 2 caps though as lordsmurf's own unit had one of the other non-circled caps fail on that unit. This is tempting, but I really don't have a need for another pass through device.

I found a taker for the unit. Admin, you can mark it "sold" I guess (even though it was free, haha).
