Updated list of what's currently available. :2cents:
My TBC supply has been steadily dwindling. If you're still on the fence about getting one, now would be a good time to act. For the NTSC TBC(ish) combos available at this exact moment, I'll consider reasonable offers. I will probably not offer TBC(ish) in the future, only full recommended TBCs. |
Have you got a TBC-1000 or a green AVT-8710 for sale?
|
Quote:
But the CDM-1500 also behaves very similar to the TBC-1000, even more than the AVT-8710 does. It reacts to certain signal issues, like copy protection, almost identical to DataVideo TBC-1000/etc. |
I'd be interested in the CDM-1500. I'm not transferring anything that's copy protected.

PM sent. :) Quote:
The green AVT-8710 has not been manufactured in over a decade. The flawed black model took its place around 2010. The flawed black AVT-8710 was fully discontinued a couple of years ago due to the needed chips no longer being manufactured. That probably would have necessitated a redesign of the unit, but instead Cypress chose to retire it. There is nothing illegal about timebase correction, nor am I aware of any lawsuits involving Cypress or rebadgers like TVOne. Even the pricing shown on their site is unreal, this TBC was never than low, even back in 2005. I could see where the flawed black models may have been clearance priced at $185, as nobody really want them, and many were returned to vendors like B&H and Adorama. But not the green one. I still remember when it was on backorder, with those orders never filled, back around 2008 or so. Anyway, right now, I have good TBCs, the units you need for quality transfers. PM sent. :) |
Added a few.
This time last year, I ran out of TBCs, and there was a dry spell for months. Nobody had any TBCs. |
Very few units are now remaining. :2cents:

Sent you a PM
-- merged -- Lordsmurf can you please post the Datavideo TBC-100 PCI card to me. Why won't you reply to the PM and email I sent to you. I paid for it over a week ago and I haven't heard anything from you since. |

- I'm an individual, not Amazon Prime. Shipping takes me time. You'll get an email with the subject "Tracking!" within a few days of being sent. - When you "send" a payment, that's not necessarily the date when actually received. In this case, it's only been a few days, not a week. Patience. :) I'd considered deleting this post, moving it to PM, but others probably need to read this as well. There's been a severe lack of patience from folks in recent months. |
patience is a virtue :)

Bump. :)
TBCs are getting hard to find, but I'm still finding a few. However, most need work first. So I often spend my days tinkering with TBCs, often total tear-downs, refurb'ing them back into excellent shape for our capturing community. |

A few months ago I saw a TBC-1000 on Ebay that sold for $1400! Ridiculous. I decided I could design a TBC from scratch for less than that. So I've been working on a TBC design during quarantine.
Currently using a Xilinx Spartan 7 FPGA + Micron DDR3 RAM + TVP5150AM1 ADC + ADV7171 DAC. If I can get this working, I'll make a thread here with more info (might take a while). Just wanted you to know that I'm frustrated about the lack of TBCs too! Board work-in-progress attached for anyone who's interested. Thanks for all the helpful info lordsmurf! |

There is a reason that only certain TBCs are suggested, and why I only sell those. When you develop a TBC with only your own sources for dev/testing, you can easily get a wrong/skewed idea of how well it works. I'd strongly suggest that anything you develop, and want stress tested, that you send it to me. I can break most TBCs, find their flaws and weaknesses, using my testing library (collected over decades). It probably will take you longer than expected, if completed at all. This isn't the first time somebody has told me they wanted to build a DIY TBC, and surely won't be the last. But to date, none have happened. It's just not that easy. But still, good luck! Quote:
The main reason that Cypress and DataVideo no longer make TBCs is due to the chips needed no longer being fabbed. (Though the successor to the TBC-100 lineage, the TBC-5000 line, was crap. And Cypress screwed up in 2010 and never fixed the flaws. So TBC manufacturers went out with a whimper, weren't really missed.) But this is a marketplace threads ... not a general discussion thread. :wink2: |
Thanks lordsmurf! Not trying to hijack your thread -- sent you a PM with some more info.

I PM'd but is that Cypress CDM-8120 still available? thank you
|
What TBCs do you have that you would recommend for converting VHS with a Panasonic AG-1980?
|
Since AG-1980 has a line tbc, I recommend a full frame tbc like datavideo tbc products.
|
Bump! Currently finishing rebuilding some units, posted the first one just now. :)
|
Hey. I normally wouldn't post in public but I wanted to follow up on previous PMs and make sure everything's okay. I'm still interested in the TBC-1000. :) Happy to talk in PMs.
Thanks. |

We're good, reply back soon. |
I fixed it, I fixed it! :yahoo1:
I've had a bad TBC-1000 for a while now. As of tonight, it's working. Not just working, but extremely nicely (clean image, good image values). I've outdone myself. Tests were run with unit dismantled. Rebuild should only take a couple of weeks. FYI, DataVideo gear often shared various parts. All of the gear is somewhat rare now, or pricey, or both. So this isn't a easy task. I'd finally managed to track down everything needed, and was able to test it. Some of the parts are new, not used. Now I need some miniature champagne bottles, a shot worth, for nights like tonight. :D I've listed it already, it's the rebuilt unit in the 1st post. It feels good to revive the units. Yet another good TBC will be put back into circulation. The new owner simply needs to take of it! All of this stuff would have surely been destined for the recycle bin, had I not intervened. |
Congratulations!
That's a major achievement. Details would certainly be appreciated. |
Well done LS, you must be chuffed! :congrats:

Any PAL devices coming up soon?

Which TBC from this marketplace would help me?
My story is the same as many others that have found themselves on this forum.
I turn 65 on Jan. 2. hooray for Medicare! haha But it also is a time of reflection and realizing I need to finish the project I stared 15 years ago! So here I am with my Mac computers yes I have a few and realizing after reading several threads they aren't the best at capturing videos but I am a creature of habit so I am going to make do with it. I have about 40 VHS tapes to do and 80 of the Video 8 tapes (not sure exactly what to call them). I have the following equipment: Sony Video Cassette Recorder Model No: SLV-N88 18 ADVC 300 SONY Digital Handicam DCR-TRV340 NTSC From the threads I am learning I need some form of TBC. Over the last 15 years I basically only uploaded 4 VHS tapes. Sad I know but maybe it is for the better considering I did it without the TBC in the workflow. Maybe with the TBC my quality will improve because to be honest not the greatest results. Which TBC from this marketplace would help me? Should I make any changes from my current equipment? My goal is to digitalizes the tapes to a hard drive and edit it down into meaningful snippets of our family's life to share with my three kids. If someone could offer guidance I sure would be grateful. |
Updated the list today!

I had not checked this thread before I sent a PM to you.
Here are my questions sent in PM to you in case it will help others: Well that V8/Hi8/D8 assignment just took 4 hours out of my life! 81 8mm Tapes (not all checked to see if they have stuff on them, about 12 not labeled so I am not sure what is going on there, I did not take time to check them at this time) 45 regular V8 16 Hi8 20 Hi8/D8 combo I am running the latest OS on all my Macs Big Sur. 11.0.1 Just so we are super clear I want the best quality whole tape on my computer and from that I am probably going to edit at least 40% out due to boring stuff. I want to get better equipment but use my Macs. Right now for 4 VHS I have used the following: SONY VCR Model No SLV-N88 --> ADVC 300 --> MacPro Here are the results from the Finder File for one tape 1987 broken in two parts https://imgur.com/AkQ94BR https://imgur.com/PTGuPCa If I get a better quality VCR and have no line problems can I do this with no TBC? Also does one even need a TBC for the 8mm stuff? And how am I doing what I have done so far without a capture card? I don't quite understand is it because I am importing to iMovie media? And that is capturing for me? |
That Sony VCR > Canopus DV box isn't going to be very good quality. Passable quality for some folks, but not quality whatsoever. Mediocre at best, unviewable at worst.
VCR with no line TBC needs ES10/15, before actual TBC (or weak TBC'ish DVK). Yes, the Video8/Hi8 is drop-happy, easy to lose audio sync. Line TBC correct picture, but does nothing for drops (that what frame TBC is for). Not sure about the last question. Perhaps you refer to Digital8 (DV) over Firewire to the Mac, which needs no capture card, as it's not really "capturing" but downloading digital data from tape to computer. Remember, this thread is a marketplace listing, not really a general discussion thread. For questions/comments unrelated to the TBCs available for sale here, a new thread in a non-marketplace area needs to be opened. Again, yes, you need a TBC. Any of the TBCs here will be ideal. |
Ok thank you.
Please PM me with what I should get for my project. Sorry for asking questions here makes perfect sense to be doing this on the workflow threads. |
I am interested in the Cypress, puhleeeezz! :2cents:

- Note the update date at the bottom of the first post. At the moment, it's not been updated since 1/7. - And sometimes, when I leave an item listed, it means that I had more than 1 unit. Not common with TBCs, but happens. Wait for my PM reply, it will be soon. :) |

Hi Lordsmurf, if you have a lot of PM I would also like to remind you of our agreement for the green Cypress AVT-8710 and the Pinnacle 710 usb, the funds have already arrived to you, let me know if everything is going well, I trust you and this forum, give me a feedback, thanks

Damn, it looks like I'm too late for one of your PAL TBC's Lordsmurf?
Relatively new member here, though I've looked in over the years while planning my project. I'm just ready to get going seriously and the TBC was the last piece :-( For comment/critique, my setup is: JVC HR-S7600 I bought off ebay a few years ago, I\'ll need to test properly though was working well when I got it ATI AIW 9000 AGP I just got off ebay, brand new but card only, drivers installed and so far looking good My 20 year old PC which I\'ve done a clean install of XP SP2 on I\'m in the UK hence the PAL requirement and the goal is to archive a small bunch of mostly home movies, quality being the paramount factor. I\'ve enjoyed reading the guides, advice and experiences on this forum and I\'m itching to get playing myself! |
Hi, replied to your email, inquiring about getting a TBC-1000
