For long-term storage and preservation drive, is it better to buy an internal SATA DVD drive or an external USB drive?

An internal DVD/BD drive is better protected in a PC case than a external USB drive, has a stronger case, and generally has a more robust power connections. Because it is built into the PC it is less prone to getting dropped, lost, beat-up, doused in coffer or coke, or stepped on.

External DVD/BD drives connected via USP strike me as flimsy, and some require two USP port connections for power, but they do provide a highly portable solution for road warriors.

A growing problem is modern PC cases tend to lack external drive slots and are oriented toward USB connected media and cloud storage.

slim externals = flimsy crap, bad lasers, bad burns/reads
full sized external via USB2/3 = same as internal SATA/IDE

The end.

Thanks Lordsmurf for clarifying my question before I thought about buying an external USB drive but for your explanation I will buy the internal SATA drive and use some case or SATA adapter for USB 3.0

I bought an ASUS and I want to store and conserve it for use whenever I need it
