A while back I bought some cheap Playo disks on sale (don't even remember where). Out of curiosity, I scanned one with DVD Identifier, only to find out that they were MCC004.

Now, the guide (http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm) lists all known Playo manufacturers as 3rd class. Soooo.. before I get too happy about my luck and wind up burning important data on bad media, are there any clues that may help me figure out if these are real 1st class disks or just fakes? Has anyone ever heard of fakes with this media ID?

It's fake stuff from China -- not authentic Mitsubishi media.

The only decent media I've found for under $20/100 lately is Office Depot's sale last week (pre-TG/pre-BF) on RITEKF1 TDK-branded discs for $17 per spindle. It's good dupe media, not fit for mastering/archives, however.

Verbatim has been steady at $20-25 on Amazon, no tax and free shipping. That's your best bet for good media. Links at http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm and prices are tracked a few times per week, updated to reflect changes.

Playo fakes several codes.
