After read previous threads in this forum about Identiftying DVD Manufacture and Media ID, I was very curious and decided to test several media using DVD identifier.

The result was quite accurate as you described, but I found there was very cheap DVD Media branded as Kachi and other not-too cheap media Mediatech displayed as manufactured by Mitsubishi..

I wonder if this is fake Media ID or probably just second-grade media from Mitsubishi
The reason I had my doubts because this media is very cheap, about 0.2 US$/pc while Mitsubishi around 0.3/pc

Here's my complete test:
Kachi-blue (blue means color of the front side/brand label)

DVD Identifier is accurate at detecting the ID on the media. However, that's not to say the media ID has not been faked.

Discovering the manufacturer of a disc is sometimes a 2- or 3-pronged approach.
  1. What is the media ID?
  2. Is the brand a legitimate/respected brand? (And therefore unlikely to use sub-grade or faked medias.)
  3. Examine the serials and other markings on the discs, especially around the hub. Sometimes looking at the bonding quality or glue job on the edges of a disc can help.
And then consider this:
  • Finding the ID is easy. But it tells an incomplete picture. In general, it shows the disc manufacturer. Faking the ID (with or without permission) misleads you sometimes, however.
  • Knowing whether a brand is "high quality" and reliable is where a lot of consumers don't really know any better. A well-known company like JVC or Kodak has been known to sell pure trash, so they are NOT a respected companies when it comes to blanks. (Note that JVC was bought by TY, so I refer to JVC in a historical sense only, back when they re-branded those awful WFKA discs.) On the other hand, Memorex is known to carry authentic discs from CMC, Ritek and others. Memorex would be a "good brand" in this context. Crappy discs, yes, but authentic nonetheless!
  • Disc markings are good, but you have to already about media quite a bit, and know what to look for. Or find somebody that has shared this info. (Note: A lot of forum users online just parrot what they've read elsewhere, so don't confuse actual knowledge with the ability to repeat. The same people tend to repeat a lot of myth and BS, too!)
Matrix branded media has long been fake discs. In fact, I'm not sure they ever carried non-fake discs. Shop4tech used to whore out the Matrix brand garbage here in the USA. (They still might, for that matter?)

Mediatech sounds like another brand, but maybe it's a sub-brand of Matrix? I don't know. There's a Mediatech/Mediastore in Eastern Europe, and those discs are known to be crap, either faked IDs or junk in general (VDSPMSAB001 from Interaxia, now defunct and out of business, I believe).

If you contacted Verbatim/Mitsubishi, found the right person to talk to, and ran this information by that person, I doubt you'd get a response that the media is authentic. At best, it's maybe back-channel sub-grade media, but more likely it's just faked MCC codes on some cheapo Chinese or East Europe production lines.

The same may even be true of GT Pro White, a brand I'm not familiar with.

TDK uses CMC, that's a given. Those are authentic discs. Of course, that doesn't mean those are high quality media! CMC just really isn't a very reliable disc -- you find just as many good discs as you do bad ones. It's fine for duplication media, as it's cheap and you can replace bad burns. But I'd never use it for archiving, backups, masters, etc.

BenQ is Daxon, and Daxon can range from excellent Taiwan stock, to worthless Malaysian crap. Sometimes the country of origin helps with understanding quality -- this would be one of those times. The Malaysia discs test worse, and tend to kick out far more coasters. At one point in time, I wanted to figure out why this was the case, but it's a moot point now -- Daxon production ceased earlier this year, so no more Daxon discs ever again.

Unbranded Ritek is probably Ritek, but quality may be sub-grade that should have been destroyed rather than re-sold as "grade A" or some other BS. It depends on where it came from.

Maxell is Ritek, yes, sad but true since midway through the 8x days. Hitachi/Maxell has not produced/manufacturer media for years now. Information in the guide is for historical reference only -- such as people like you, who have just discovered media IDs, can scan your own discs, and refer to the charts.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a "Mitsubishi" branded disc -- Verbatim is the in-house label. Interesting. That might be an Asian or European market thing.

In most cases, I would assume fake ID vs sub-grade. It's far more common to find outright faked media than it is to find sub-graded discs. The only exception may be UK, where there's been a lot of funny business through the years. It's a complicated mess over there.

Best to stick to known-good brands, to get known-good manufactured discs. If possible, of course -- I know some places don't make it easy to find good media. A few locales can be expensive, too.

I did a little Google snooping about the Mitsubishi branded media. I came across this reply from Verbatim Europe, to a customer that posted it in a forum:

Quote:
For your information the Mitsubishi company responsible for these products is Mitsubishi Electric based in Dublin, Ireland. Neither we or our parent company, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Corporation, have any formal connection with Mitsubishi Electric and we do not supply them with any optical discs or floppy discs.
Now I'm just speculating here, but there's always a chance a non-MKM "Mitsubishi" branded disc in Europe could be using fake MCC media. Given how some companies think they exist purely to profit (as opposed to providing reliable/quality products and services), it's not outside the realm of possibility. I'd really scan the package, and look for "Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Corporation" to be printed somewhere. If it's not there, I'd pass for sure. You'll find MKM listed on all Verbatim DataLife/DataLifePlus wrappers.

There is (or at least was, at one point), Mitsubishi MKM-made MCC media sold under the Mitsubishi brand name in Asia (Japan, for example), and it was authentic media.

It would really depend on where it was bought, and what was on the package. Details are important. At this late date, I'm sure that info and materials are long gone, since I'll assume you're checking discs you burned in years past.

Such a mess, this whole media industry. It was worse in 2003-2006. It's calmed down a bit, especially after the recession of 2008-2009 killed off so many crap operations.

Thx a lot for your quick and detailed response..
it really helps
So, it appears that "Kachi" and "Mediatech" faked its Media ID then. I haven't tried "Kachi" yet but "Mediatech" is quite good coz I've burned several of its CD product and still readable after 5 years or so.

I am surprised to know that "Mitsubishi" branded media is not popular around the world. In my country, there are two brand made from Mitsubishi: Verbatim and Mitsubishi..I live in Indonesia btw, Asia

"Mitsubishi" branded media is known to be very good media in here and in par-quality with Verbatim. The price is quite the same or in some places only slightly cheaper than Verbatim.
And from my own burning experience, I have never experience bad-burn or failed, or data unreadable after several years.
I only burn less than 100 "Mitsubishi" branded media, however.

Well, again, the reason not all Mitsubishi branded media is popular is because not all of it is actually related to Mitsubishi Kagatu Media (MKM,MCC), that owns the Verbatim brand. In some places, another "Mitsubishi" is preying upon unsuspecting customers that don't know the difference between the real MKM media, and their knock-off product.

Because of how far apart the writing grooves are on the media, CD-R is not as temperamental as the DVD formats. CD is more forgiving of imperfections, especially those that relate to wobble, or the affects of warping and scratches. So it's not uncommon for lower-grade CD-R to be "okay" -- just note that cheap CD media can degrade faster. Unlike DVD media, the CDs are not protected on their upper surface, and there can be environmental damage on the exposed foil materials, and thus the underlying data-holding dyes.

A number of geographical areas in the world end up with lesser grade media, often due to economic factors of the inhabitants. As a member of the G20 (meaning it has a good economy), Indonesia probably has good media available, as opposed to other poorer nearby countries like Vietnam. If your budget allows, I suggest you always keep a nice stash of known-good discs available. Buy a spindle of Verbatim, for example, don't wait until you need blanks and then find out good discs have disappeared. That happens from time to time, especially in the smaller world markets.

Glad to help. Thanks.
