1 to 2 TB SDXC flash memory cards for data storage to use like an external hard drive

I read online that SD cards will be coming in capacities for up to 1-2 TB, if so, could one use these in place of bulkier external hard drives for long term storage of data? like photos & video? could it be formatted to be read on macs & PCs?

it would be neat if I could put all my data on small media, & I could have it with me where ever I have my laptop, for a completely portable setup, as opposed to bulky external hard drives with moving internal parts.

The longevity of solid-state "flash" based media is still suspect. It would not rely on it as a sole or primary archival format. At best, maybe a secondary or tertiary copy, for convenient size and transportability.

I'd love to have my main drive on an SD card, as a mirror copy, to take with me on location, instead of lugging around the external brick that is my 2TB RAID drive. (I could transfer to the RAID back at the office.)
