I stumbled across this while fiddling and trying to solve burn problems.
This applies to Apple MacIntosh computers; OSX 10.5 Leopard
For DVDs, to get the media ID.
Open Disk Utility and insert the DVD.
Click on your superdrive in the upper portion of the sidebar.
Then at the bottom of the window, after capabilities, click "click for more information". This opens system profiler for the superdrive. Near the bottom under media is the ID. This is the code that tells who manufactured the DVD (what else I don't know).

Thanks for the added tip.

Many disc-related tools and software packages -- especially disc burning software -- now include the media ID and other disc data in some form, in some place. It's been a trend more and more in past years. Toast shows the ID too, in various places, in various versions.

When in doubt, the "media ID" softwares out there are still always your best bet to finding what is important. This topic is described more in depth on the digitalFAQ.com main site.
