M-Disc blank DVD media ... Any testing done?
So I realize that the M-Disc "archive" DVD media had come up in a few threads back in August, and LS reviewed a pretty weak article written about the M-Disc Here -- http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/medi...cranberry.html
But, I'm wondering if any of the staff or members here have picked up an LG M-Disc burner and done any testing to see if they perform well, or if there happens to be any advantage to these? I saw a burner on sale for $70 today an it reminded me about the subject. I'm not really planning on switching from my routine of backing up to Verbatim DataLifePlus and keeping them in a box in my closet, but now that we've had about 6 months since the original article from Millenniata being released I thought I'd see if anyone took the M-Disc for a... spin. (Sorry for the bad pun :p) |
Not yet.
The odds of it being special are very low, as outlined here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/medi...cranberry.html We've seen the "best unique disc" card played so many times that it's a low priority to investigate, compared to other site/research tasks. To date all I've read is fluff devoid of science. |
Yeah, I'm bumping in old post. :cool2:
I bought a stack of M-Disc blanks for testing, as they're now available in Microcenter for a decent price. (Not sure how long Microcenter has had them, but I'd not seen them there a year ago.) There's a new LG burner in a new ATI AIW system that I'm building. Some very important projects are being restored right now. When those are done, a second master copy will be burned to the M-Disc, then tested long-term with a full battery of tests. This is my idea of fun. :D |
Any progress on the testing?
Pioneer Customer Support states that none of their current drives support (at least officially) M-DISC technology. (This is different from what the M-DISC site has posted). I don't need 1000 years, but a reasonably assured 100 would be great! |
I noticed that Microcenter was giving out of stock already. I wonder if this flopped. :hmm:

The Fairfax, VA, MicroCenter shows a few in stock. SuperMediaStore shows it in stock.
I see M-DISC released a Blu-ray version this summer. Apparently not many [people are switchign to them yet - cost is substantially more than standard DVD-R, an not many people worry about content readability 10+ years from now I guess. Probably not a product for the typical movie ripper, but it strikes me that the wedding and similar event folks should be into it, at least for file master copies, if it is a tenth as good as they claim. And a marketing plus at a modest increased cost (~$2 per disc). |
