Hi Digitalfaq.

I had heard that blank DVD gold disk could be a problem, so I looked into it, and found your site, and the page: blank DVD media quality review. I am now very confused, because you write that gold disk are of a poorer quality to silver once, but on the same page (later on the page) under: 1st Class blank media, you list JVC Taiyo Yuden DVD+ and -R (TYG03 and YUDEN000T03) which are both Premium grade gold disk. Are they an exception to the no gold disk rule (since you put then under 1st class blank media)?

Yes, Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim (Mitsubishi) are an exception.

Why, you ask? Because the gold content is not used for the reflective layer. The reason gold media is lousy is because the entire foil layer is gold -- and it's a less reflective surface.

TY and Verbatim likely released this media due to consumer demand, and nothing more. Many people consider gold more valuable than silver, yet it has nothing to do with media quality. In fact, gold if worse!

Gold media sells because of consumer stupidity ("lack of knowledge", etc -- whatever nice term you prefer here). Gold media manufacturers make lots of dubious claims, and that market was able to eat into normal DVD sales. TY and MCC needed to combat this. But instead of educating consumer with truth, they just released the own gold media.

In order for TY and MCC to not damage their reputation with low-grade junk, they marry gold onto the silver. Thus they can now claim that they have gold media, too!

So they no longer lose market share to shady marketing. Although it could easily be argued that they're now doing the same.

Just avoid gold media.
- The solid-gold media is garbage.
- The half-gold (silver bottom) media is for suckers. Don't be fooled.
