Since getting my new Pioneer I can only burn at 4X
I tried ProDisc f01 8x Ridata 8x Fuji 8x
I replaced my LiteOn dvd drive with the new LiteOn combo Drive and it only reads at 4x. I already checked my DMA settings. My Pio is my master in my second IDE, HD master and DVD-Rom slave in primary IDE. Any ideas?

Are the jumpers set master/slave, or cable select?

What firmware?
What discs? I don't want to hear brand names, I want to hear Media IDs.

How fast does it burn off the hard drive from an ISO file in DVD Decrypter?

There is a bottleneck somewhere.

How much does the LED flash on the drive?
Does the buffer throttle up and down?
Sounds like it wants to burn 8x, but underruns.

Usual suspect is PIO/DMA.
Have you burned in this configuration with other drives?
Have you ever burned 8x before?
What CPU and how much RAM?
Are you use IDE 80-pin cables?

How much does the LED flash on the drive? with the old dvd-rom drive the led was very bright and pulsating very fast, but now is the opposite. The burners led is always green
Does the buffer throttle up and down? no

Usual suspect is PIO/DMA. both are set to DMA

Have you burned in this configuration with other drives? yeap my old plextor and liteon dvd burners averaged around 7x

What CPU and how much RAM? 2.6 and 576 ram
Are you use IDE 80-pin cables? both are 80

Could always be a dud drive, but my instincts says it's something else.

I would not mess with the HP.
There may be some damage to the motherboard or RAM.

Also try replacing all the cables with new 80-pin ones.
Sometimes the ones that comes in the box are no good.
This is next most likely.

The Pioneer is the best.

The Sony is a LiteOn rebadged. Alright.
Dynex is a BTC. Alright, except for TY DVD-R media (bad burns).
HP is HP, I'd avoid.
Memorex may be a BenQ, I'd avoid.

I still say the trouble is not the drive.

I got me the Aopen DUW1616 and same problem, I bought some 16X and it burns at 8x. My Prodisc's are 8X and it burns at 4x. I noticed that the burner LED and my HD LED are in sync. I am not running any screen savers or antivirus.
