Storing DVD discs, how to archive many discs?
 

I have about 100 DVD discs that are made by me (not pressed) on DVD burner. All these are important discs containing movies, personal videos made by me.

What is the best way to physically store them so that they do not scratch or get deteriorated easily? I won't be using them often, just as back-up storage only, since they are copied on to hard drives for playing anyway.

Buying jewel cases for each disc is expensive proposition. I have some DVD Wallets and some spindles at my disposal.

Also, are there any additional storage conditions (such as placing silica gel...etc)? Many things in my house gather dust over time, so can I also place all these in air-tight containers such as big plastic boxes?

If not using with any sort of frequency, mostly just stored as the backup they probably are, then go with either 4x 25-disc spindlers, or 2x 50-disc spindles. The 100-disc are too flimsy. Then set those in a box or drawer. Done. That's what I've done for several years now. All the content is saved to HDD as ISO, and those are watched on the network or local drive connected to TV media player.

Cardboard somewhat acts as silica already, absorbing moisture. Feel free to add more, if you're in a humid area.

This also assumes you're keeping those in an internal temperature controlled environment. I know we have some members here that don't live in locations with modern amenities like AC and heat, and there's really nothing can be done about that. If it's hot and sticky, storage isn't your biggest problem.

That is correct. You can slide a piece of paper between each disc. :congrats:

Ok. You mean a round paper cut in the size of a disc with hole at the centre?

No. I mean the discs are not touching, even though it may appear they are. And the reason you can tell they're not touching is because you can easily slide a piece of paper between the discs.
