This post should be organized/fixed and either added to the vcr buying guide or a whole new thread

http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vide...cr-buying.html

also it would/could be helpful to get a guide started that talks about setting up workflows. Not so much what goes into them but for example If you have a Hi8 Camera you should really use an svideo and plug that into a TBC then plug that into your capture card, then audio plugs from the camera into the capture blah blah blah. I can make one if you want as I have a pretty good idea of what goes into where

Listed.

My plan is to keep doing regular improvements on this site, all year long. Health permitting, lots of things will happen by end of year. (My health is still an unknown, but when I have energy, I spent it most of it on my hobbies, including this site. Practicing my skills on my hobbies is how I'll be able to get back to work someday. This is all physical therapy and occupational theory, in one form or another.)

Blank CD-R guide (details on rankings, where to buy, etc): http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/medi...ity-guide.html

Blank BD-R guide: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/medi...ngs-guide.html

It would also be great to see a guide for burners as well.

The media guides are one of the things I want to tackle most -- hopefully as soon as Oct/Nov/Dec. We have mountains of data to share, and have just never done so. (We have, however, shared some with other research bodies in the past, as well as government and law enforcement agencies.)

Several valuable sources for scientific research have disappeared in recent years.

This is something that will expand the site by at least 50 pages or more.

The current DVD pages will be rewritten and expanded by at least 3x.

It was on the 2011 agenda (but too many studio contracts then), so pushed back to 2012, and then me being unavailable delayed it by 2 more years (where we are now).

indeed. Do you mean related bodies doing active research, or completed research information that's somehow inaccessible now?

It's a little of each, unfortunately.

Most research ended years ago. However, CD, DVD and BD is not dead, nor is it going anywhere. New optical media products, methods, and philosophies have been changed or added since the others research stopped.

Sites from many of those groups are either stagnant or have gone missing. Some groups were entirely disbanded. I have several of the full sites downloaded here -- a habit we got into back around 2010, having seen several important sites go MIA forever. Some others are on the Archive.org wayback machine (for now, at least).

The only secondary testing we really get now is from manufacturers only -- especially with Blu-ray media. In other words. not trustworthy. SSD, by contrast, has more independent research.

We'll be adding VHS research as well. For example, if you have a mountain of tapes, and are not sure where to start -- we have the answers for that. Or if you converted a tape, and never knew why a specific tape had issues. We have answers for that, too!

It's a real treasure trove of data here. Sharing it has always been the problem. There's lots of writing involved! And it's essentially pro bono.

We'll be doing some hard drive and SSD media guides, but that's going to be mostly geared towards hosting. However, there's going to be a 1-page buying guide for hard drives for home/office use. (Buy Seagates! Buy Fantoms!)

But, for now, we're organizing the forum. Hence this thread.

I started with a pre-made app, gutted most of it down to a skeleton, then custom build it back up to be what we need here.

A new homepage for the site is also nearing completion, to make new/current guides and forum posts (and coupons!) more accessible. That will be nice.

The forum archives will be integrated into the full forum next month.

Once this is done, we'll begin to concentrate on implementing everything discussed in this thread. It's all on the docket. If anybody else has anything else to add, do so. We're doers, not talkers, so this will all get done. It's just been slower than desired for the past few years, for obvious reasons that were unavoidable.

And there's more, too! The reviews section is mostly built as well. This was somewhat easier, as it's custom templates based off existing site pages.

I just wanted to give an update. I'm excited about the new coupons section being near finished.

If your still taking suggestions?...(1) perhaps a Trouble shooting guide on ATI capture card problems?..(I have been away from capturing for a long time now, partly due to other projects, and partly due to frustration over possible 9600xt shielding and /or macro flickering some time ago during capture. Today I found an exellent reply by LS (to my "Shielding defective 9600xt card?" post). Which refreshed my memory, and and gave some hope again!...(2) Also maybe a "Fixed/Tips!" section to common problems?..Like this one I found for cooling AV Toolbox!..I found this E-table mini-cooler at my PC guy's shop..(Hope the fan magnets don't add un-wanted artifacts to capture!!

BTW, Lordsmurf's reply about troubleshooting shielding errors can be found on "Faulty Shielding on my ATI All in wonder Video Card?" posted 11-24-2013

That's a neat fix for the TBC. I like cooling mods for video hardware. I've done quite a few myself over the years.

ATI troubleshooting is already on the list.

Can this post with pics be moved/copied to Project planning/workflows? or should I just re-post from scratch?
