Other good DSLR's should I not be able to get the Nikon D7000 ?

AS, asked, I am making a new thread about DSLR's

Quote:

Make three lists in the new thread:
1. Your absolute needs -- what this body MUST do for you.
2. Your wants -- what you'd like it to do beyond your core needs.
3. A run-down of your budget (ideal + max), timeline when you need it, and full specs of whatever camera you are using currently, as well as a description of your photo experience to date (including types of cameras you've used - P&S vs SLR, film vs digital).

1. I need the body to make good clear shots reliably, shoot artwork of various sizes, to make good prints for a portfolio, would also be nice if I could make prints to sell from the shots as well. For submissions, generally if I need to shoot an artwork that I may never be able to get back & photograph again.

Need it to work in low light get shots that are low noise, in low noise meaning being able to go ISO 200, 400 & above without graininess. shots of action, & nature, some thing that can snap a picture fast. I have used a point & shot, & sometimes I lost a shot because it was slow to turn on, focus & take the picture. I prefer not having to use a flash, but I will if needed.

Also to be able to get good clear shots hand held, without always having to use a tripod for lower shutter speeds. It would be preferred if the body was weather resistant/proof, durable/can take a bump & made of metal instead of cheaper polycarbonate plastics in plastic cameras. It would be nice if the camera was not too heavy if I have to do alot of walking carrying it around my shoulders. I also ride my bike alot, I do not drive, it would be nice if I could carry it on me while riding my bike or on my bike. Wight of the camera is another issue because I have small hands, & a big heavy camera with a longer lens hand held may get camera shake.

2. a good movie mode with good options good focus for moving objects., so I do not have to carry two items for each purpose.

3. my ideal budget would be about $1,000-1,800, & max would be $2,000. I dont have a rigid time line, but within the rest of this year or into next spring, I have to plan my purchases with allotments of school money. But there is no real rush, I would rather take longer & get something that is good quality will last me a few years.

4. My experience/history so far with cameras; fair warning; alot of info to sift through, but I was asked for it. I started when I was a small child with on old 1980s vivtar film camera. In late 1990's I used a sears brand KS super film SLR camera from the 1980's. It had an aperture & shutter priority modes, & all one had to do was set one or the other, press the shutter halfway down, & when looking through the viewfinder a green blinking dot would indicate wrong exposure, a steady green dot meant that the exposure was right & ok to take the photo.

Since the film camera I switch to digital point & shoot cameras, starting with a 2004 Samsung digimax digicam, it had a 3x optical zoom with 4 megapixels & took just standard SD cards, of which I still have; one is 64 mb, the other 128 mb.

Then in 2004/2005 got the point & shoot Sony cybershot DSC-W5, then in 2007, the DSC-W7 both with a 3x optical zoom, 5 & 7 megapixels. With these cameras, I discovered the movie capabilities of digicams, & came to use it alot. I began making movies with the mpg footage in Roxio easy media creator, but this got to be difficult, with video & audio sync problems, & family pressuring me to make DVD's of footage they shot all the time with them. Turned out to be blessing & curse, & got distracted away from my initial purpose of good photos & references for my art.

In 2006, I got the Sony Cybershot DSC-H5, still a point & shoot, but was my new "SLR like" digital camera. It has a 12x optical zoom & is 7 megapixels. I have used this for general photos & my art, & the smaller sonys where I dont want to carry something heavy.

Now I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 point & shoot with 12x optical zoom & 12 mega pixels. I have used this in place of the Sony DSC-H5, as it has the big zoom like the DSC-H5 but in a small compact camera that fits in my purse. So I get the best of both worlds, of my big & small Sony cameras.

So now I would like the real deal of an SLR, especially with my art, as I have tried to get good quality by shooting slides with the film camera I used, & scanning the slides. I figured this would be better than using my current point & shoots, since the film was better quality & I could get any resolution scans from the slides. But I would like to just shoot digital & not hassle with slides & scanning.

By the way, I checked amazon for the d7000 kit, on 10-31-2010, & it was available for pre order from amazon directly, so I placed a pre order. I dont know if I did this right, but it seemed like a small window opening, so I went for it, whether it will actually arrive for amazon to ship is another thing. Amazon showed it would be released on Nov 15, 2010.

If Amazon let you pre-order the D7000, and it took the order, then I would feel pretty sure that you'll be receiving something mid to late November! As far as I know, Amazon does not just accept money for products if they are not guaranteed to have more incoming units. They would just show the "temporarily out of stock" notices that you and I have seen so much.

So this conversation may be unnecessary. :)

amazon reply to my d7000 order inquirey & my account

I e-mailed amazon to be sure my account was ok, so I would not miss out on the camera when they ship it & charge my card & this is what they replied back with;

Quote:

Hello,

Thank you for writing to us at Amazon.com. If the item you order is sold by Amazon.com or one of our Merchant partners, we won't charge you until the order enters the shipping process. If you ordered from one of our Marketplace sellers, your credit card may be charged at the time of purchase.

Looking into your order, I see that Nikon Digital SLR is back-ordered. I'm sorry about this delay--we certainly didn't expect that this would happen. We'll notify you by e-mail when your order is shipped, or if there are any further problems. We normally obtain this item from a supplier who can usually send it to us within as listed on our website from the time your order is placed; however, in this case, the supplier has taken longer than expected to respond to us. If you haven't received a shipment confirmation by November 23, let us know by visiting the URL below: (gave me a link to help wheres my stuff)

If you'd rather cancel your order, I understand. To cancel your order, go to the URL below and click the "Need to cancel an item?" button: (gave me a link to cancel) We look forward to seeing you again soon. Thank you for your recent inquiry. Did I solve your problem?
If yes, please click here: a link for yes
If no, please click here: a link for no

Best regards,
Sathish D.
Amazon.com
I guess I will just hang & wait to see what happens? is this the best thing to do now? do you think I will still get my order?

admin 11-03-2010 09:17 PM

Yes, just sit tight, and see how it goes. I would not look to cancel for at least the next 30 days (around December 1). This may be your best chance at getting a body. Being on a "wait list" is not uncommon. It may be back ordered, but I would guess that's only a temporary issue.

kpmedia 11-12-2010 10:38 PM

D7000's should start shipping from Amazon on Monday.
If you were able to place a pre-order, then I'm betting you'll get one between now and December 20.
I hope you get it earlier rather than later.

Honestly, I think the runner-up to a Nikon D7000 is the Nikon D700 -- even though it costs about twice as much. That's from a purely photographic stance, of course.
- D700 body (~$2,350): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B001BTCSI6
- D700 kit with 1 lens (~$3.150): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B001BTG3BE
Not sure that this kit lens with worth $800, although 24-120 is a nice range for an FX full-frame Nikon camera.

The next step down yet again is probably a Nikon D5000.
- D5000 body (~$700): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B00267S7UK
- D5000 kit with 1 lens (~$665): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B00267S7TQ
Yes, you're reading that correctly -- the kit costs less than the body alone right now! Crazy.
- D5000 kit with 2 lenses ($~85): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B0026FCKA0

Or a Nikon D3100
- D3100 body (~$550): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B004ALFV5Y
- D3100 kit with 1 lens (~$640): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B003ZYF3LO

There's some pretty good deals on these right now, from Amazon. Great low prices. No coupons or rebates needed. With Black Friday coming up, some of these cameras are sure to go from in stock to our of stock for a while. Happens every year.

I'd still hang on to your D7000 order. I bet you'll get it soon. Wishing you well on it.

If I bought a D7000, I'd eventually get a grip for it, as my hands are large male hands and I shoot a lot of vertical images during sports season (basketball, especially). Nikon's official grip is already out.
- D7000 MB-D11 grip (~$260): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B00436G2OU
Give it another 3-6 months, and I beta $60 knock-off (that works just as good) will come out.
- Zeikos make a good D700/D300 MB-D10 clone grip: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B001T9N0RQ

That's all from me! :)

The Nikon D7000 is in stock today at Ritz Camera
Or at least, it claims to be in stock (note that online stocking is sometimes not accurate).

Link to Ritz: ritzcamera.com

I would NOT cancel your Amazon order, just in case. But it may be worth trying to order from Ritz, too, who possibly did NOT have a pre-order. Remember that yesterday was the first day that these cameras were shipping (11/15/2010). Whoever ships a body first wins the race?

Just a thought. :)

Sossity 11-17-2010 12:42 AM

thanks for the link, I just clicked, it is out of stock again, & I have checked on my amazon order, & there are no other available actions now (recently placed orders have this option), I cannot cancel now, it shows as being prepared for shipment. So it looks like there is no turning back anyways. Amazon gave me a link to contact them if I do not receive a shipment confirmation by Nov 23rd 2010. If I don't get the confirmation by this date, is there anything specific I should ask Amazon? besides the obvious of where is my order?

kpmedia 11-17-2010 12:50 AM

No shock on out-of-stock Ritz. That happens, often within hours (sometimes in mere minutes).

Prepared for shipment is good! That means your card is being authorized (check your CC/bank statement for the $1K+ charge), and a unit has been reserved for you, and it will likely ship within 24-72 hours. Been there myself -- that's always the MO of that status. You got it! The Nikon D7000 will get to you before Thanksgiving.

Now the bigger question is this -- do you (yet) have any lenses to go with this wonderful new camera?
Or were you waiting until you got the hard-to-get body until buying the easy(easier)-to-get lenses?

It'll be funny if you have this fancy camera that you can't even use for a couple of weeks :)

Still... this is progress. :)

Sossity 11-17-2010 01:05 AM

I checked my order for the last couple of days, & this is the stage it has been in, being prepared for shipment.

No I have not bought any lenses yet, I wanted to be sure that I actually will be getting the camera first, the saying "getting the cart before the horse" I did not want to get lenses & something goes wrong with the order.

What if amazon e-mails me with a problem with my card, I e-mailed my bank, & they said this has happened to people buying from amazon, in the past on some orders amazon has needed me to verify my card, or enter a new credit card number, I had to do this even though I already had the card on file. My bank says there is nothing wrong with my card.

well, back to lenses, I was looking for something that I could use should I be forced to carry just one lens around.

Also, I am looking for a good carry bag of some sort for the camera, something I could use on my bike, I actually made a thread about this.

I found this 50mm lens that was suggested to me on ebay; http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT is this safe to get? or would I be better getting it new from amazon or a camera shop?

I also would like to get lens protectors or transparent filters to protect the from of my lenses from scratches, that way if the filter gets scratched, I can replace that.

kpmedia 11-20-2010 08:46 AM

For the sake of organization...
And so this thread doesn't look like it has unanswered questions to anybody else that may be reading it...

-- The 50mm lens question was answered here: http://www.digitalFAQ.com/forum/show...lens-2572.html
-- Questions on the bag will be answered here: http://www.digitalFAQ.com/forum/show...back-2563.html

Now, to answer the "clear protector filter" question...

A UV (0) filter is transparent to all but UV light, and serves as an excellent lens protector. The more funds you spend, the better the quality of the filter glass. Seeing how I own lenses that cost $1k to $2k apiece, I'd be a fool to use cheap filters in front of it. What's the point of buying expensive quality glass only to make it lose all quality by adding junk in front? A minimum, I would always use Japanese Hoya HMC or S-HMC (Super HMC) UV filters, which run about $50-75 each for 77mm. Personally, I mostly use German B+W UV filters, which run closer to $100 each for 7mm. (Note: B+W is the name of the company, not shorthand for "black and white" -- don't confuse this as many tend to do.)

The filter you get depends entirely on the size of the lens diameter. Most of my lenses are 77mm, a standard among most pro lenses. I also have a high-cost 82mm that I must buy for.

Note that smaller filters cost less money. Less glass, less money.
Without looking, I think the Nikkor 50mm lens, for example, uses a small 52mm filter. Those are about $20-30 each, so very low cost. A quality filter tends to run about 10-20% of the total lens cost, on average.

Hoya S-HMC UV (0) on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.ht...reative=390957
B+W UV #010 on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.ht...reative=390957

Never buy filters on eBay. There are far too many fake filters out there, made out of crap glass.
I would ONLY buy filters from Amazon directly (not a third-party seller, unless it's Adorama).
Or from Adorama or B&H directly.
