Have you tried resizing them with IrfanView (it's free) and then using its "Save for Web" plugin? Works like a charm.

Hi m Brands,

There are many. You can use server based scripts if you want to minimize all images in bulk. Else you can use any online lossy compression tool to reduce image size manually and re upload them on your website.

Freeware like Gimp does "save for web", which compresses down as much as possible.
As does aforementioned freeware IrfanView.

I've used the popular payware Adobe Photoshop since the early 90s, and it's had a "save for web" function since the early days of web (either 5.0, 5.5, or 6.0, I forget, around 1995 or so). At least 20 years now.

You also need to remember to resize the image. Not a huge MP image direct from a camera, but something around 1000 pixels max.
