Scanner suggestion for negative scanning
 

I normally scan and store important documents & printed photos.

I have a lot of photo negatives that I would like to scan.

I currently have a HP all-in-one unit, but I see people suggesting a stand-alone flatbed negative scanner for best photo scanning results.

Please suggest a current good model. I don't want professional-grade due to high costs.

Around $300.

Flatbed is quite bad for film scanning and usually even worse for negative film which is sometimes tricky for even the high end film scanners. Epson V700 which is among the best flatbed scanners for film is over your budget and quality is not so good even then, and scanning is slow and cumbersome.

In a budget I'd try to find second hand older dedicated film scanner, like Nikon Coolscan or Minolta.

For new ones, Reflecta and it's rebrands should be better than flatbed - http://www.scandig.com/filmscanner/reflecta/index.html (there are a lot of good technical reviews on that site about different scanners).

Both of these Plustek linked here are good for scanning negatives. There is one $400 which is a better scanner, so if you are able to budget $100 more, it is well worth it. You can always resell it later and get some if not all of your money back for it.

The alternative is an Epson V600 or better, which is good at slide scanning, but not as good at negative scanning. In this situation, I would recommend the Plustek. If you are in a situation that needs both, that makes for a hard choice.
