As far as packet sniffing and activation: Basically if you control the domain and you know how the application authenticates with the sever, you can just put up a page to allow any reg key to work....

+1 on Diopter_Doctor. He repaired one for NIN Ryan. He also made me a couple cables to bypass the distro amp entirely on one of my backup 1000s. So there's lots of options.
