I'm not sure, I'm avoiding Catalina like the plague. :) I plan on staying with Mojave for as long as possible. It should be OK though, as both Handbrake and MakeMKV are updated regularly.

The ffmpeg ProRes 422 HQ from Virtualdub2 works very well in Resolve also, which is what I use after I'm done with AviSynth/VDub. I'm not sure what the difference is between that and the BMD version.

As long as you are not capturing to the external drive you should be fine. Your transfer speeds may not be the full USB3 speeds if your system is older with USB2 ports.
