To remove it pull the center black plastic sleeve from the shaft and the pinch roller will come off, to put back slide the pinch roller on the shaft and insert the plastic sleeve until it stops.

SP tapes are recorded at the highest tape speed the VHS standard offers, usually pre-recorded tapes. LP, EP, SLP ....etc differs from standard to another and from a VCR to another are lower speeds...

Only better if you have a crappy plastic adapter, I actually prefer my JVC adapter that has a very smooth rotating metal tape guide rollers, better than the average full size cassette shell.

Since you already messed up the alignment may as well try those bad tapes and see if you can recover the most out of them, I doubt though the distorted audio can be improved by miss aligning the VCR....
