I'd also go for a few of those short extenders, also depending on final price (I'm EU-based).

There's no "firewire out" on PAL D-VHS decks. It's disabled by hardware. The DV connector is input only... and PAL-DV only in my units, for that matter.

Double-check your camera(s) settings....

I tend to favour the FS200 (I keep one at hand) over the 1000 (sold it). I find it gives a slightly 'rawer' image (read: a 'less-processed' look). But this is nitpicking, YMMV and you can't go wrong...

For VHS playback, the DVH-8090 is lousy, and utterly hopeless in SQPB mode. (I currently own two of them.)

BTW, FWIW, that Thomson is far from a straight "JVC rebadge" (that would be the Philips...

If you're talking about a PAL HM-DR10000, there is no digital output from the deck — not "DV-out", nor "MPEG-out". It was disabled at the hardware level, by design. PAL units are "DV-in" only. The...

The "M1" and "M2" ("MONO-1" and "MONO-2") indicators are (were) active during the reception of bilingual broadcasts/signals (esp. NICAM). The tuner would select "M1" by default. You could then...

As pointed out elsewhere (http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/home-video/8892-pal-vhs-deck-3.html#post61904), that Thomson model is a POOR choice for VHS/SVHS: mediocre playback quality overall; on top...

Just stating the obvious, but... WCS, if the '1st-gen copy' isn't edited in a major way, you can always resort to the two-pass/assemble method:

(I don't think that's the case here, but) it is always possible that the Hi-Fi audio on the ‘1st-gen copy’ comes from a separate audio source.
These gigs were often taped simultaneously with a...

These HR-S9600EU units (and other JVC models as well) can be picky for Hi-Fi playback, especially for tapes recorded in different (domestic) machines/brands — I've found they tend to fall back to...

@D.Page: These JVC/Philips PAL D-VHS decks may be ‘‘more stable’’ (speedwise?) to cope with the slower LS3 D-VHS mode, but ‘‘more robust’’ (both in the sense of reliability/durability and tape...

From personal, first hand, long-term experience with these — if you're not going to do any DVHS transfers, you'll be better off with the HR-S9600EU/EK.

There were, historically, a few domestic/prosumer (PAL) VHS decks with RGB-out (e.g. Philips VR-813, Thomson DVH-8090).
But the picture quality wasn't so great. VHS and S-VHS top out at S-Video, so...

Good choice.
That Philips model is in some ways a (little) bit better than the JVC it clones: you get the always-on-sight frontal display and a (slightly) less crappy mecha.

Just be aware...

Well, that Thomson is SQPB-only...
And, to be fair, its VHS performance isn't stellar, either. The model clearly focused on D-VHS.

PAL D-VHS machines also had the ‘LS3’ speed. But not Firewire output whatsoever (deliberately left out by the manufacturers).

Also — there was a Thomson PAL DVHS model too (the DVH-8090, not a JVC...

Take a look at the tape itself.
That behaviour is fairly typical of latter JVC players when the tape edges are damaged (even slightly). In fact, these machines have a tendency to do that damage...
